Housing for Freshman - 2006-2007

All three are good choices. In terms of location, all of your choices are located within several hundred feet of each other, all around McCarthy Quad. As for the social scene, I believe North would be the most social. Maybe you might be better off with Birnkrant or Pardee. In your case, I'd just flip a coin or something to make your dorm choices.

hmm. thanks for the advice. i liked what the housing pamphlet said about north, but according to some other posts on cc, it seems like the housing pamphlet is mostly bs : ) any opinions about the rooms in north/binkrant/pardee? any major differences? pros? cons?

Well, I've never been in Birnkrant, so I can't comment on those rooms. North and Pardee are both comparable, in terms of room size and space. Both have built in wall shelves/cabinets. The bathrooms are common, basically they're at the ends of hallways, etc. I couldn't say any more than that, cuz I live in Parkside Suites and my experience is altogether different from the dorms.

all the freshman dorms are within the same distance to the classes. new/north is a big party place and does live up to its reputation in some wings. (the building is divided into wings) go to http://housing.usc.edu and look at the rooms in the virtual tours the birnkrant rooms might be slightly bigger. and pardee furniture is unique to its building, no other dorms have that style of furniture. (the desks are different and the beds can't be lofted up higher)

Ahhh I really can't decide between New and Birnkrant.

does anyone know if the specialty floors (like the business one in north) are a good idea?

When I view the photos of the various residence halls, it looks like they all have a mini fridge or microwave in them. Is that included or do you have to rent those?

yup its included!

Well, I put Birnkrant, New and then North.

It's only mid-February, so ONE of those should work out.

I don't know whether I will get the Presidential scholarship or get into the TO honor program. But can I still put down the Dean's Hall?

The micro fridge and microwave is included in every room. Yes, I think you can choose Deans' Halls - not everyone here is on scholarship or in TO.

thought this should be bumped

too late for first choice if its a populr one?
what do u all think

Put it down, you might end up getting lucky.

can anyone discuss fluor? i can find nothing about it here :(

Well, the current students today all got wind of the new guaranteed housing for sophomores starting with this year's entering class.

http://www.dailytrojan.com/home/news/2006/04/24/News/sc.Pledges.Housing.For.Sophomores-1866409.shtml

Many people I talked with today are quite furious about this.

I stayed in Fluor during Explore. (hey that rhymes)
It's on the corner of campus along with Webb tower, so depending on where most of ur classes are, it might be a bit longer to walk. (most business classes are closer to the other cluster of dorms, where pardee is at)
Fluor is single sex suite style w/ coed floors. It's cool b/c there's a gym right next to it, and there's a food place (don't know what it's called)
Also, I think it's one of the closest place on campus to the Row, so if that's what you're into it'll be a lot easier.

Redski59, why are current students mad about the guaranteed housing for sophomores starting next year?

i would assume it's simply because we (current students) did not get a guarantee after our freshman year, and for those living in non-university housing because they were forced to, I believe they are no longer eligible to reapply for R3 (our renewal process).

Doesn't matter to me, I've found an awesome place a couple blocks from campus for the next 3 years. My 1 year here at North was good, but it's time for me to move on.

^ Yeah, what he said. A couple of my friends didn't get housing at first in R3 and would have had to go on the waitlist, but they just got housing in City Park Apts instead.

But there are some of my friends who don't care, as they got housing in Tuscany next year. And then I personally got Cardinal Gardens for next year, so I'm ok.
