Housing for Freshman

Are housing based on a first come first serve basis? Do I get better selection if I send in my deposit earlier or can I wait? The reason why I'm asking is because I really need a single room because I can't concentrate with distractions and I wake up very early. Also, are single rooms grouped together so that we can meet people easily? I don't want to be segregated just because I have a single. Finally, do some of the single rooms have shared kitchens? Finally, when do we get the housing info or are they available online?

I think all the ED admits are assigned rooms through a lottery process before the RD admits have their own lottery

Single rooms are scattered throughout all the buildings. If you're in the AMR's, your single will open out directly into a hallway with tons of other rooms. If you're in Buildings A/B or in Wolman, your single will be part of a suite, so you'll share your private bathroom and suite enterance with 2 other people in a double.

If you end up in a single in Wolman, your suite will have a private kitchenette. Otherwise, there are common kitchens in the basements of the other buildings.

I'm not sure when exactly housing information is sent, but I'm guessing its after the reply deadline (May 1st?)

ED assigned first. Then RD assigned. Both are lotteries with your number being better based on how early you submitted your enrollment forms and deposit.

See tanman's answer

once again tanman is correct

Housing info will be sent after your enrollment form and deposit have been processed.

So people who submitted early are actually more likely to get the dorms they want? I thought they're lotteries. so shouldn't they be random? or am I misreading something?

If they are lotteries how are they not random? how do you get a better number if submitted early? how many RDers get singles?

Yes, the earlier you submit the better the chance you will get your first choice.

They do the sorts based on date of your deposit. So for instance everyone who deposits on May 17 have a better selection spot than those on May 18 and May 19 and so on.

Only ED students are guaranteed their first choice in housing if they return their deposits and forms on time. Assignments are randomized based on those deposit dates -- so lottery is not the right word, but one that is often used.

Very few RD students will get singles outside of a single in a suite.

With all this talk about dorms, I was wondering.. what buiding will single sex housing be in this upcoming year? My mother is driving me crazy about it! Also, I really want an AMR single.. it sucks that the chances of obtaining one is very slim :-/

fj - i checked and unfortunately i could not find if the Housing Office has assigned the single-sex floors for this coming year.

Last year, Hollander and Royce houses in the AMRs were designated as singe-sex housing for males and females, respectively - I expect the same will be true this coming year.

Which of the dorms are or will be carpeted by next fall? The housing website doesn't seem to have this info... (by the way, the virtual tours and floorplans are very helpful -- thanks!)

I could be wrong (and hopefully a JHU student will correct me) but by this fall all housing will be carpeted. The last set of AMRs are scheduled to be carpeted this summer -- I think. So don't quote me on it.

Cool!

And may I add -- AdDan, you're the best. The accessibility you provide to the whole inner workings of admissions and attendance at JHU is unmatched anywhere else. (even when you don't want to be quoted on something!) Thanks.

I haven't heard anything about Building A/B being carpeted. I know that last summer, they did a "test" and carpeted a couple of rooms in Building B... so maybe they're planning to carpet the rest of the two buildings this summer? I don't know anything official - you could give Housing a call (x6-8282) and ask them.

Living without carpeting really isnt a problem at all. I live in Building A and we have linoleum-type floors. It makes it pretty easy to clean (just use one of those Swiffer disposable mop things) and most people walk around the building with sandals on anyway. (The hallways in Building A and B are carpeted)

Edit: The phone number for housing is 410-516-8282

See I stand corrected, and by none better than tanman.

singme - thank you for your nice comments, i appreciate them immensely.

I did just call the housing office (Tanman, thanks for the number), but the woman I spoke with didn't know anything (and actually thought all the A/B rooms had carpet already.

If anyone hears/knows anything specific, please post.
