Housing for UM Transfer Students

As a prospective transfer student coming from a commuter school, getting accepted to UM would be my first experience living on campus. The university offers a “Transfer Year Experience” where transfer students are housed at Northwood III, which is cheaper, but I’ve heard it’s a little dingy. Does anybody have any experience with this program, or has lived in the Northwood apartments, or even just living on North Campus? Otherwise, is it at all common for transfer students or sophomores to live in dorms? I’ve been thinking about trying to get into the Hill Neighborhood if I have the chance, but I’m not sure if it’s looked down upon to live in a dorm as a sophomore or if it’d be harder to make friends when people see you as the odd one out or something. Any advice?

I know several transfer students lived in the dorm in Hill area in sophomore year. It is nothing odd. If possible, I would try to avoid Northwood III. It is not a typical dorm experience. Indeed, it is more like an apartment but on campus, not to mention the dated facility.

Hey Billcsho, piggybacking off of this post, how would you say the social setting is in Stockwell? I have been given the option to take someone’s contract for a single in Stockwell, however I am concerned since the Hill area is a little off from campus, and because it is only sophomores and up so I am concerned about making friends.

Stockwell is great but I think it is mainly for sophomore. They call it the sophomore experience. We actually like the dorm in Hill area. It is in a quite environment and yet just a little walk to the central.

@billcsho Do people at Stockwell generally close their doors and stick to the groups of friends they made the year before? Is there any sense of community among the sophomores?

@ArmenHammer It is really up to you, your roommate, and your neighbor. As it is for sophomore, they can pick the room that is available at their turn. Most would pick a room with friends nearby. My D picked a single room next to a friend so they can share the fridge and microwave. So they leave door open when they are in. They also have friends a few door down the hall.
