Please help with transfer student housing!

I was recently accepted to LSA as a transfer student (Biology major). I will be transferring from a community college as a junior. Does umich still have the lottery for transfer students? can transfer students live in dorms? I would really like to live on-campus, preferably on central campus. Also, if i live in the northwood III apartments, can i be matched up with roommates? I won't know anyone there. Thanks for all your help.

You can live in the dorms, and you can be paired with roommates. You will get to list three buildings of preference and a preference regarding roommates.

Hey, I think I remember you from the U of M transfer students thread! I’m in the same boat - transferring to UM this fall.

As far as housing goes: transfer students are NOT guaranteed housing, but if there is any available, you can choose from whatever’s left. You should get an email from University Housing soon telling you that your housing app is ready to be completed, and once you do that it’ll give you a list of rooms available to you. I got my email this afternoon; I followed the link, logged on, did the app, and was presented with a list of available rooms. I don’t know if you’re a guy or a girl, which I’m guessing determines what rooms are available in which halls, etc. but the selections for me (I’m a girl) were pretty slim. There was one North Quad room available - a double in a quad suite - so I grabbed that one right away and I’ll be living in North Quad this fall.

The other selections were from Baits, Oxford, and some Northwood apartments. Yikes. My boyfriend lived in Oxford last year and while he said it wasn’t terrible, it wouldn’t have been his first choice!

The weird thing about housing selection at UMich is that once you hit “select a room” from your list of available choices, you aren’t necessarily obligated to sign the contract, but selecting a room locks you out of searching for any more rooms. Basically, once you choose one, that’s the only room you can possibly get. When I called housing asking whether I should grab the North Quad room right away or wait to see if any other good ones in places I might rather have lived - Cambridge House, one of the other quads, etc. - he said that housing is really hard to get for transfers, so your best bet is to make a choice fast rather than waiting to see what might become available - people who don’t want to risk waiting will end up with the good places and you’ll be stuck in Northwood or something!

This got really long and kind of ridiculous, but bottom line: you should expect a housing email soon (I was accepted on 3/17 and got mine today, I don’t know when you got accepted) and then once you finish your app, you should choose housing right away, even if the selection isn’t prime. Good luck!

thanks iloveumich! do you know if i can get matched up with roommates for the northwood III apartments?

Really disappointed with the amount of housing options we were given… I’ll be living in Oxford fall '11. Let me know if any other transfers will be!

My daughter received her email yesterday and immediately went in for her selection. Other than Baits, Bursley, Northwood and Oxford, there was Couzens - double and Stockwell -triple. She took the double. There were no quads. Our gameplan was if there wasn’t anything good on central campus (except Oxford housing) was to continually check the website for new listings. Apparently there was a N. Quad listing taken later in the day(?) that was not available when my daughter logged on.

There is also an option of contract reassignments that students post that are available to transfer students. The hassle with this is if you find a student who wants to transfer their contract, you both have to wait until August 1st to do the paperwork in person at the Housing office.

I’m even more confused now. How can people sign up for housing if it says that housing applications will be available in April? If I pay my enrollment deposit today, when will I get the email to choose my housing?
I really appreciate all of your help!

dadw3kids, when did your daughter do her housing app and select her room? I received my housing email at 12:15 PM yesterday, logged on and did the app within a half hour of receiving the email, and my only choices were Baits, Northwood, Oxford, and the one North Quad room that I selected. If your daughter did her app after about 1 PM yesterday, I was the one who took the North Quad room. What confuses me, though, is that I did not have Stockwell or Couzens rooms as an option, even though I think I logged on and selected before your daughter probably did (since your post said a N. Quad room was taken at another point in the day). When did your daughter do her housing app and room selection? And is she a sophomore transfer or a junior transfer?

Habala55, I’m 99% sure you have to have paid the enrollment deposit to be considered for housing, financial aid, etc. - that’s why they tell you to enroll and set up your UMich email account as soon as possible. My advice to you would be to pay your ED asap if you’re sure about UMich, and then once you are confirmed as a student they’ll start taking you into account for things like housing. Housing isn’t guaranteed - act fast or there might not be ANY housing left!!

It’s weird - the Housing office told me I wouldn’t get an email telling me I could register for housing until the 1st or 2nd week of April, but I got it yesterday. It seems unusual that they would actually get information sent out two weeks early… two weeks late seems more likely for big Us like Michigan!

Wow, they have changed things since last year. I didn’t have to pick from what was available, I just listed three preferences and I got my first choice-- a central campus dorm. They really are hard up for housing!

My friend lives in northwood as a transfer, historically that was where transfers usually ended up. She really like it, honestly if my disabilities didn’t complicate the bus issue I’d have moved to northwood. So don’t be too disappointed no matter what you get, you’re going to MICHIGAN and that’s all that matters. :stuck_out_tongue: You can make yourself comfortable no matter where you get.

Ok thanks guys for all your help! does anyone know if it’s possible to sign up for classes before orientation? I’m worried that if i can’t get some classes I might not be able to finish in two years.

iloveumich- The housing email was received on 3/28 at 12:10 pm. My daughter called me at 12:15pm (as shown in my cell phone). The call lasted just over 6 minutes. There was no North Quad room shown. You did your selection about 45 minutes later and North Quad must of shown up as a room option (not sure how housing loads open rooms). I told my daughter to select quickly as the site indicates someone can claim a room while you are deciding and looking. It would be interesting to know how central campus dorms are loaded for selection. Also, not sure if ALL transfer students received the email at once or are staggered during the week. Certainly, if you want a specific dorm and it doesn’t show up maybe continually checking the website may have the dorm you want show up later in the day. Nerve-racking!

iloveumich- daughter is sophomore transfer.

I just paid my deposit and this thread has me worried that I won’t get any place on campus. I’m not prepared to live off-campus and I can’t afford an apartment. Do my prospects look as bleak as I think they do?

finnlet, i am having the same worries about not being able to live on campus. does anyone have any info on availability? i really want to live in a dorm.

i filled out my housing application yesterday and unfortunately the only housing options left were northwood apartments. there may be other options for guys but as of right now, that’s all there is for girls :/. i called the housing department to ask if it was possible that any other traditional dorm options would open up and he said its very unlikely.

but if you go to the site and look at both contract swaps or contract reassignments, they have a few options open. hopefully a few more will show up soon because most of them are singles- but it’s always another option for all of us who got shafted with housing!

sarahb91, they still have Northwood apartments left? I’d much rather have that than non-University housing, even if it is on the North campus. Hopefully, I can apply for housing soon and something good will open up…

yes, they still have northwood apartments left. both northwood II and northwood III selections are available and there are a good amount on there so i’m sure they’ll still be available by the time you’re able to apply :)

I got the housing e-mail today and managed to nab a place in Cambridge House! Central Campus, here I come!

Finnlet, if you don’t mind me asking - what sex are you? I know availability of housing is, of course, different for guys and girls- I’m a girl - but Cambridge House was my first choice for housing, and yet I applied over a week ago and there was no Cambridge House room available. Does that mean that the housing options are changing and that maybe I should have waited to select housing? I grabbed the first decent looking room I could find, a double at North Quad, but I would hate to think that in going for the best room I saw right away, I missed out on a chance to live in my first choice!

If you’re a guy, though, never mind - the housing options would have been different. Thanks!

iloveumich: I’m a girl, so I would say that, yes, the housing options are changing, though not frequently or drastically. The place I got in Cambridge was half of an open double, and it was the only non-Northwood listing I saw.
