Housing: Gateway, Lorenzo, or West 27th.

Hello everyone,

I am a incoming sophomore transfer and I am currently looking for housing. USC owned housing is full and it seems that Lorenzo and Gateway are pretty popular housing choices around USC. However, they seem to have pretty awful revies regarding poor management. As for West 27th, there doesn't seem to be much on that apartment. Just wanted some feedback, opinions, and experiences about any of the three.

Our D has been living in StuHo managed housing for a year, and we are reasonably happy. They have a wide variety of apartments, she lives quite close to campus in a fairly new building. If you are interested in a sublet at Gateway, check the USC Parents facebook page–I think someone has a student doing a study abroad that is trying to sublet their spot.

Here’s a thread with a recent conversation about some options outside of dorms. I have one going to Gateway this year, and like you, I was concerned by the poor management reviews, but others who had experience living there said those seemed to be in the past and overall were really happy at Gateway. I know the students love Lorenzo too, great amenities, just farther away. Gateway probably won out for mine cause it is so close to campus, he didn’t look at the other ones. I also have one in an apartment (privately owned, run by Stuho) and while a great unit, that has been too challenging - hope this one stays at Gateway or one like it till he graduates. I like not dealing with furniture and room mates late on their rent. (Gateway types charge by the bed, not entire apartment.) Hope you find something you like.

I have one at Lorenzo. Great amenities, mind boggling not up to prime time management. Still enjoying the experience though. Honestly - the management issues in many of these large relatively new complexes primarily happen because the people in the offices are young and inexperienced and following a script. And because they are working with facilities full of students who are often living on their own for the first time. My kid has had to advocate for services quite a bit and has been successful - does it without losing her cool - and it’s been fine so far. Nothing like the Yelp reviews that make it sound bad. Like Gateway, however, they charge by the bed. So helpful if you know who you are rooming with first. There are small safes in the closets but I don’t think that’s enough. I would like Lorenzo better if it had an affordable “single” option in the multi-bedroom suites.

I’ve lived at Lorenzo for the past year, and haven’t enjoyed it. I’d personally go for Gateway - it’s a lot closer to campus, still nice rooms and apartments and amenities.

D happy at West 27th and she’s had no issues w/management. Though as you’ve seen more recent comments about safety issues. No matter where you stay, you need to be conscious of safety issues, especially at night!
