So I have officially decided to attend WashU next year, but now I am having some trouble deciding how to rank my housing. I have decided that I would prefer a single if possible (though I would be okay with a double if that is what I get), but I am unsure of whether to rank traditional or modern first. The modern dorms do seem nicer, but I have seen that some people have traditional singles in suite setups. For me, I believe this would be the ideal setup, as you have your own personal space yet still have people right there to socialize with and be potential friends. However, if I rank the traditional single first in hopes of getting a suite style, I might just get a normal traditional single without a suite setup, in which case I guess I would prefer a modern single. Basically, I just really like the idea of a suite and would like to know if they are common or not.
So I guess my questions are- are traditional singles in suite setups common? Also, what is the setup of modern singles (are there suites)? Does anyone have any experience with modern or traditional singles that they can share? Is there a big difference between the quality of a traditional or modern single, and is one more common than the other for freshmen? Any housing advice in general?
I’m sorry for all of the questions, and I do realize that pretty much all housing at WashU is fabulous and that any one of these setups would probably work out just fine, as most people seem to be happy with their housing regardless of where they end up, but I still worry about choosing the ideal setup for me (even though I know I might not get my top choices anyway).
I would really appreciate any information or advice at all. Thank you!
I don’t know much about the modern set up as my D lived in a traditional double as a freshman. But as a sophomore, she lived in Hurd which I believe is now used for freshman. I think it is the set up you are referring to - a six person suite with two doubles and two singles. The common area was spacious. On the housing form, it asks “If offered a traditional room, would you prefer a suite configuration?” I think if you select a traditional single and answer yes to this question, you will probably have a better chance of getting this setup. Here is a link to a description of all of the housing. Maybe it will be helpful. We were told that about 75% of freshman get their first choice and about 92% get their first or second choice. You could also call reslife and ask how many of these suites are available and how popular they are as a first choice.

@PAO2008 Thank you so much! I really appreciate the info, and that link is super helpful!
@PAO2008 I’m an incoming freshman assigned to Hurd. Can you please tell me more about the dorm? I really just know about the setup (two singles and 2 suites with a common room etc) but do u know anything else? My first choice was a modern double, and I was sorta bummed about being placed in a traditional dorm considering all the bad stuff I heard about it (My Friend at WashU told me Hurd was the 3rd worst dorm for freshmen after the traditional dorms with communal bathrooms yikes)
@nineteeth123 I don’t know too much about Hurd. My D liked it a lot. It has two doubles and two singles and one bathroom - that I think had at least 2 sinks. I remember that the common area was very, very large. There was a couch and a table and chairs and they had room for a large screen TV that someone had brought from freshman year. So my recollection is that the double rooms were slightly smaller than what my D had as a freshmen in Lee, a traditional dorm, but that the common area is so huge it more than made up for that. I think there are 4 suites per floor, so 24 people per floor… I’m not sure why someone would call it the 3rd worst freshmen dorm. All of the dorms at WashU seem pretty nice. As I said, my D lived in Lee as a freshmen. It was much nicer than many dorms we’ve seen at other colleges while looking with my S. How did you find out you will be in Hurd? Here is the link I posted before.
