So I assume that picking a roommate(s) that want the same dorm you do would significantly increase your chances of getting the dorm that you want - is that correct? Actually, what I'd really like to know is if I'm the only one who doesn't have a roommate picked out after CPW!! It seems like the people I know have all paired off...

for NH, can you choose NH1, NH2...or NH5? or you can only choose NH for now?

no one says NH. drop that.

I don't even know if he means Next House or New House (well, I guess I really do because of the numbers, but still)

looks more like New Hampshire to me

who the heck has a roommate picked out after CPW??

its not uncommon to room with somebody that you stayed in the same room with at CPW, if you got along; the matchups are carefully considered for CPW assignments, anyway

just seems to ruin the surprise of living with someone you just met.....

As for the roommate thing, girlfriendmb... some people from competitive high schools know several other people attending and might have friends they want to room with. For example, I met a large group of people from Stuyvesant at the CPW farewell breakfast.

Even though I would love to meet more people, I've heard of horror stories of roommates (and read on CC as well) that I personally would not like to experience. I know, I know... MIT gives you so many outlets to change roommates, BUT, I would like to live with someone I know for sure I'd get along with.

I've had so many friends who were really good friends in high school and were roommates 1st year of college and at the end of that year they hated each other. But whatever works.

I kinda like the randomness. But whatever floats your boat.

equal weight displacement of water floats my boat

Random roommates are better than people you 'knew before'. You can not get along with someone you are sure you'd get along with. Friends are generally terrible roommates.

As far as having a roommate picked out after CPW, I don't know what other people are doing, but I met someone and we agreed that if it came down to having a double, we would room together.

Oh well, I guess my roommate will be random, which worries me sometimes, but it's far more exciting than knowing everything beforehand

I'm also going to be paired with someone random, unless i meet someone cool during orientation. I'll be 1000+ miles from anybody I know.

Haha. I'll know quite a few people in boston. You don't have anyone else from your school going to the area?

No, I'm from Florida. Except for one person going to Stanford, everyone I know is going to community college, FSU, or UF.

You'll meet lots of people during Orientation. :)

There's horror stories either way... I have many friends who were friends in high school that roomed together here and were very happy - I think its just that with random roommates you expect less. If you know the person you know if you'll be ok living together
