Housing Options for Freshmen

The SU website lists the housing options for freshmen as Reed, Smith and Hassinger. Questions for anyone currently attending SU or parents with kids there:

1) What are your relative likes and dislikes about each dorm?
2) Are there any other housing options for first year students not mentioned on the web site?
3) Are there any particular floors or rooms that are highly desirable or undesirable? Why?
4) What would you recommend that a first year male student request when asked for housing preference?

BassDad,

My daughter likes Reed best. It's the middle of the three freshman dorms. Smith has about 275 freshmen and is the largest. It has a reputation of being the party dorm. I'd take that with a grain of salt. There are more kids there, so naturally, theres more that's going to happen. Hassinger, where my daughter lives, is (in her words) "small, quiet, and boring." There are only 85 students living there. She has a number of friends who live in Reed. She really likes Reed (houses 165- 175 students) and feels it's a nice balance between the two. My daughter spends a lot of time at Reed and would change dorms in a second if given the choice. Hassinger has tiny rooms. Hers is the largest on the floor and measures only 12 x 13. Reed and Smith are much nicer and the rooms are definitely bigger. Upper classmen have a real nice choice of dorms to choose from including Sassafras, West Hall, and West Village. Each are new (or relatively new) and really nice places to live.
