housing options for transfer

Ok so ill be attending ut next fall and need to figure out where I should stay.
This is what im looking for
1. something close to campus
2. im majoring in economics (liberal arts)
3. somewhere to park my car
4. i would prefer to have my own room

There are a lot of threads on housing. All private dorms are close to the campus. All housing done through UT Austin itself are on-campus. I have heard Castilian, a private dorm, is the closest to the Liberal Arts School. I am not familiar with the on-campus dorms.

As for your own room, they are very expensive to get a single dorm room and not recommended because you need to make friends. Good luck.

The Castilian is good for your choice. and own room (plenty of singles in the castilian). or get an apartment on west or north campus.

Thanks Denumx and Xtra for you guys response.Ive thought about it and I now want to live in near by apartments. Xtra u said I should look for a apartment and north or west campus which one us closer to the liberal arts college or were ever I’m taking the majority of my classes.
Thanks again :)

I think West campus would be closest to the liberal arts college. just search for some apartments near West Campus. However, the rent for West Campus would run around 700-1000 dollars per month for a single bedroom. I am trying to find a cheap place to live myself the next year.

Thanks Xtra ill look for some in west campus and ill be fine with roommates i just wanted my own room

Also Xtra are the majority of the west campus apartments furnished

Most apartments in Austin are not furnished. Though you can rent furniture for a price. The only places that are furnished are places like off-campus dorms such as Dobie & Castilian or some apartments like The Ballpark and Longhorn Landing (South/Riverside).

I’m looking for an apartment myself if I don’t get a dorm at UT for a transfer.

Thanks Xcellerator :slight_smile:
Also could anybody care to explain how they found their furniture while staying in west campus
And what furniture would one need; would i be alright with a bed and a dresser or would i need more

@Jayseen, YOU NEED A DESK!! :D

haha yea msolo how could i forget that one

Craigslist is popular source for inexpensive furniture. UT also hosts a big garage sale in Gregory Gym every August. If you prefer new, Ikea is just up I-35 in Round Rock.

This is a popular choice (in the store and on Craigalist) <a href=“Products - IKEA”>Products - IKEA;

Try the coops. Maybe some have single rooms available; it is worth investigating. They are furnished. You would meet a lot of people if you live in a coop, and it will be really inexpensive if you can put four hours a week toward room upkeep. Plus you will always have someone to eat dinner with - and you won’t always have to cook.

Taos is so close to campus it is practically on campus.

Nueces is basically furnished apartments, each with four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and it only requires 2 hours a week but doesn’t serve meals.

<a href=“Austin Co-op Directory - List of Cooperatives in Austin, TX”>Austin Co-op Directory - List of Cooperatives in Austin, TX;
<a href=“Affordable Student Housing - ICC Austin”>Affordable Student Housing - ICC Austin; shows a few singles available.

I think the coops are not a great idea for freshmen but I think they are nice for transfers or upper classmen.

Jaysen, if you are moving into an unfurnished apartment, you will need a table and chairs for eating dinner and dishes and pots and pans, too, unless you find roommates who have all of this and are willing to share.

We’re looking at Taos for next year for my son. They had rooms left for women for this fall, but I think they’re full for men. I e-mailed them, and they said my son can go ahead and apply for next year if he wants.

Thanks guys for the input :slight_smile:
It looks like i have a lot to think about.
But just to clarify things, is their any hope of me getting an on campus dorm?

You could apply and try to get a room on campus but if you have not yet applied for a room on campus, it is getting very late to get one, especially for a transfer. I think you are unlikely to get an on campus room. You could email housing and ask them.

The Castilian is right across the street from Kinsolving; really almost on campus and great parking. It might suit you. They generally have rooms available at this time of year, although maybe only double rooms. I am not sure about that. That is an option for you.

One of last year’s transfers said later that she was glad she ended up in Dobie and that she liked it there quite a bit. I don’t know what the parking situation is there.

Thanks MidwestMom2Kids i applied a couple of months ago but haven’t received a contract yet.

Last year a transfer student who was hoping for a dorm room found out in June that she wasn’t going to get one and had no trouble getting a room in Dobie at that time. Her username was TMT90.

She later posted that she liked Dobie a lot.
(You could wait it out.)

Thanks again Midwestmom I think I might wait awhile and see if UT will offer a contract.
Wish me luck :)
