housing options for transfer

Ok does anyone know of any furnished apartments near ut austin with rent less than 700 a month?

Yes, I think El Dorado apartments has around 695 a month furnished. Why can’t you buy the furniture used from craiglist or heylognhorn or facebook forums?

El Dorado apartments is on the IF shuttle but takes around 15 minutes to get to UT by walking. It is on speedway.

Well like I said, The Ballpark and Longhorn are really cheap for like $400-$500 for a furnished single I think…

yeah xcellerator i looked into those apartments but would prefer some a little closer.
xtra I never thought of that, Ill look into it

I think both the Ballpark and Longhorn have bad reviews on apartmentratings.com. Plus, aren’t both of the apartments in Riverside?

yeah all of the reviews were bad that I read thats why im looking for other apartments

Has anyone heard about the following two apartments? I am trying to find a one bedroom apartment to share with my friend.

Buckingham apartment at West 32nd Street and West Ave
West 24th Street Apartment

I’ve heard that the West 24th Street Apartments are great. Good reviews from everyone with fair $875 for a single all bills paid rent that inludes parking. I’ve been looking into it…

Has anyone heard of the Abbey House? It looks like a pretty good option, and they have a 9 month lease. [Abbey House - Small dorm near UT](http://www.abbey-house.com/abbey/index.php)

And also, there’s The Holloway. $394/month for a single w/ everything sounds ridiculously cheap. http://www.theholloway.com/

I have not heard of Abbey House before.
It sounds somewhatlike Goodall Wooten, which I have heard is a dive.
http://www.goodallwooten.com/

Nine month leases are nice.
Furnished is nice.

Yeah, I’ve heard of Goodall Wooten. Mostly a lot of bad things about it lol. It looks wayyyy old for me. :/

And there’s an attorney’s office on the 1st floor of the Abbey House if one is looking for jobs too. $11-12 an hour sounds like a pretty good deal lol.

Has anyone heard Texan Pearl or Texan Tower? I can’t find any review on Texan Pearl. How do they compare with Jefferson West?

This thread may be a better place to discuss housing. I don’t want to hijack the J26 thread.

We had an apartment locator helped us tour some apartments last Saturday. The apartments she showed us were either too old or too dark. All of them have very bad reviews. These apartments are the Warwick, Red Oak, and Bungalow. The Red Oak looked really nice but the reviews scared me. It’s in an area with some homeless people who may be walking thru the aparments, peeking into the window and ****ing in the laundry room. Originally, my friend and I were going to share a 2-bedroom apartment but that seems to be unlikely because of the price. We will live with sharing a room now. Has anyone heard about 21 Rio? We are planning to get a large room and split the cost.

plnlin2, I know about the place. it is brand new. However, the price over there is a bit expensive for me.

It is very expensive but we will pay 575 each for a large room in a 3-bedroom unit. It looks like parking is included even thou my parents dont want me take my care there - for now. What’s the reputation of 21 Rio? We will go down to Austin tomorrow to see it and tour other apartments too.

If you want to live in West Campus and are concerned about security, plan to pay extra for gated parking. There is no perfect option. My daughter lived in different locations each year:

The Ridge Apts on the Far West Shuttle. -Loved the neighborhood and ease of catching the shuttle, but wanted to live closer due to so many group projects/late nights on campus.

Private condo behind Dirty Martins with covered, but not gated, parking.-Homeless person lived in her parking space. Really! She had a part time job in Westlake and often found a homeless guy asleep in a lawnchair in her parking space when she returned. Police were no help. Once her car was broken into and had signs that it was slept in -yikes! She started pouring water all over her parking space when ever she left to discourage “camping” and the guy finally moved on.

Jefferson 26-It was brand new that year and prices were very low. Air conditioning often out, internet access usually out. Crazy loud.

Lived with a relative and got a campus parking pass. Price was right and no west-campus craziness.

Son lived in Jester 1st year and loved it. Only downside for him was the extra time it took to walk down from the 10th floor, which was often faster than waiting for an elevator. He’ll be there again next year. Plans to co-op next few years, so not sure about housing plans then- other than NOT west campus or Riverside area.

Should add, both know folks who lived off Riverside and moved after a year. Outside of the student apartments, the area is scary. Bigger problem though was that the shuttles are often so crowded that they don’t even pick up students at all the stops. Getting to class on time requires leaving much earlier.

zlc thank you for your reply about jefferson 26. I was planning to move there.

Thx zlc, you are right. There is no perfect option. It looks like the best possible option for me is sharing a room with my friend in a nicer apartment that is close to the campus and with secured parking. My parents are very realistic and don’t mind paying more now after touring several apartments and doing lots of research on the internet. But I don’t want to overload them too much. They are paying for 3 college kids. One of them is studying abroad.

Hey guys I’ve been reading the posts and would like to thank everyone for their input. With that said, I was wondering how I should play my current situation out. I really want to live on campus for the simple fact that I’ve only visited Austin twice in my life so i dont know my way around the city. but unfortunately I’m a transfer so my chances of getting housing is slim I would think. So do you guys think I should just find an apartment or take my chances on ut’s waitlist.

If you don’t know anyone, you might as well wait to see if you get in housing from the wait list. If you don’t get a spot, there are always last minute openings in the student oriented apartments-both through the properties and via Craigslist. The bonus is that you’ll generally get a better rate because they will be desperate to have the space filled. Even with the drawbacks, living in west campus is the closest option to living on campus. Many of the apartments and off-campus dorms are closer to classrooms than some of the on-campus housing.

okay that is good. I plan to get a room off campus.
