My daughter will be attending VU next year. Can anyone give us any
information about the living communities or the substance-free dorms?

Freshmen dorms are on the South Campus and are all substance-free since freshmen are under 21. Learning communities are housed on the same floor or wing. The rooms at Katherine and St. Monica are used for tripling when needed. There is usually one all male/female dorm on South Campus. Freshmen do not get a choice for housing but the earlier your deposit is submitted, the better. Residence Life triples rooms in reverse order of deposit. Hope this helps.

There are different learning communities devoted to different things. Personally, I'm not in one but one of my best friends here is in healthy living. Most people who do one like it but sometimes they get annoying or so I've heard. You may however get a little bit bigger room if you do one but personally I wouldn't do it just for the room.

And in regard to the substance-free dorms, there are none. Although technically because freshman aren't 21 is should be substance free. They're not though haha. I do however, believe that if you check off substance free on your housing forms they pair you with someone else who checked it off as well. So it's more of a substance free room. There are no substance free hallways either. IMO, I wouldn't do it. It's college and people are going to drink whether or not your daughter chooses to or not so I don't really think checking off substance free is going to gain her anything.
