Is housing priority done by deposit payment date?
No. It is totally random. The housing application won’t even be available until April. My daughter submitted her application as soon as sh could and did not get her housing assignment until mid-August.
If you want to look at a specific dorm, look for the learning communities that are housed there. You can choose either a specific roommate or a dorm area, but not both. If you have a medical condition like asthma (with a doctor’s note), the housing office will provide an air conditioned room, or a room that pertains to your needs if possible.
Most freshman end up on North Campus, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it is quieter and closer to classes if you are in the music, engineering, or art & architecture schools.
@ TooOld4School. Nope. It used to be true that “most freshman ended up on North Campus”. It is no longer true. With no dorms closed and the conversion of one of the North Campus dorms to a “Transfer Student Experience” the MAJORITY of freshman are now housed on the Hill or Central.
Only about 1840 of the approximately 6000 freshman are housed on North. ( look up on U Mich housing which gives you numbers… This is assuming No upperclassman in Bursley Baits ) In other words less than a third of freshman now get North!!
Sometime U Mich at info sessions will spout the old “Most freshman get North” to try to make people less anxious and more resigned about it. By which I mean that people think " well at least I’ll be with the majority of freshman" But it is simply false.
If you are not an athlete or in a learning community, an all-female community, the Residential College, or Honors, then there is a good chance of getting North as a placement. Keep in mind a good amount of spots are also reserved for residence staff, who are typically sophomores and up (although next year staff in-residence will largely be juniors and up due some changes in staffing structure). Also, in residence halls with learning communities, a sizable number of sophomores will also be taking up spots since most/all learning communities have sophomore peer leaders.
- = Has air conditioning in most/all units ** = Not sure about the air conditioning situation *** = No air conditioning in most/all units
Central Residence Halls:
**Fletcher: Really small residence hall, a good percentage of which are sophomores+ if I am not mistaken
**Betsy Barbour: All female
**Helen Newberry: All female
***South Quad: Traditional freshmen can be placed here, but a good amount are athletes/honors
Martha Cook: All female (requires special application)
*East Quad: Residential College takes up a lot of spots, Gender Inclusive Living Experience, a good amount of first-years fall into neither of these, however
*West Quad: Many are Michigan Community Scholars Program, many are also traditional students
*North Quad: Sophomores+ with few exceptions in special cases
Hill Neighborhood Residence Halls (also on Central Campus, but more on their own):
**Oxford: Largely traditional first-year
***Mary Markley: Largely traditional first-year
*Stockwell: Sophomores+ with few exceptions in special cases
*Mosher-Jordan: Sizable majority are Michigan Research Community or Women in Science and Engineering Residential Program (MRC and WISE RP), some traditional students do live here, however.
*Alice Lloyd: Lloyd Hall Scholars make up a large portion of this hall, some traditional students get placed here.
*Couzens: Health Science Scholars Program (HSSP) make up a large percentage, some traditional first-year students
North Campus Residence Halls:
***Bursley: The largest residence hall on campus, some freshmen here are in the “Living Arts” community, but the vast majority are traditional freshmen
**Vera Baits II: Mostly/all traditional freshmen
**Northwood III: Many traditional freshmen, a good amount of upperclassmen as well - the other Northwoods are graduate housing
From Umich housing to my kid: Northwood iii houses transfer and graduate students. No freshman.
You are right, I think. They house many undergrads, but not usually freshmen - good call.
