Freshman Housing

I have a lot of questions about housing. I know that there is information on housing on Michigan's website, but I would prefer to learn about housing from current or former students. Here are my questions:

1. What is the best housing for a freshman?

  1. Will I get a better/ worse experience living on different campuses?

  2. What time do buses stop going to North Campus?

  3. Are people in Honors/ Residential programs clique-ish?

  4. What dorm has the biggest rooms?

  5. What dorm is in closest proximity to the center of campus?

  6. I would like to know anything else interesting about the dorms at
Michigan that will help me choose my dorm?

South Quad

I don't get it. Central campus is ideal.

2:00 a.m. I think

Not any more clique-ish as the rest of people on campus. You tend to hang out with the people you live with and the people you have classes with. For honors and RC, these people are often one and the same, so you're going to naturally hang out with them most.

Not sure. On the average they're all about the same, but some dorms have a few select really big rooms. Barbour is small I know.

The j"--- Quad" dorms are all about the same. Martha Cook and Barbour/Newberry are also pretty close.

That's much too general. Read some other threads.

You will not have the opportunity to choose your dorm. On the Housing application, you will be asked to specify North Campus or Hill/Central Campus. If you indicate North, you will get it for sure. If you indicate Hill/Central - you've probably got a 50% chance. The only ways to guarantee Hill/Central are: 1. Apply for female housing. 2. Be part of a Michigan Learning Community, Honors, or Residential College. People are way too hung up on living on Central Campus. Although you have to deal with the bus, most students have a pretty good experience on North Campus - and meet lots of friends. There are over 2000 undergraduate students on North Campus, most of them freshmen.

I live in Ann Arbor and will be attending UM. I really hope I get Central campus but if not, so be it... Central is just closer to everything, but you can get by fine in other places.

I believe you can get free taxi service during the after hours on weekdays. Check the U of M website.

Yeah...south quad isn't the BEST dorm. The BEST dorm is a factor of personal preference...in general, I'd say any of the directional quads (E,S,W) are pretty much on par for being the better dorms.

KB

snorky, that 50% chance you speak of- would that be in general or for people who register early?

I think they start the housing process in March and a ton of people don't pay and begin until April or May.

West Quad > South Quad.... on every level

East Quad = West Quad = South Quad = (probably) North Quad.

North Quad=Narnia?

haha...surely you've heard that the U will be knocking the Freize Building down and building a North Quad in its place. Constructions starts this summer. Should be complete for Fall '09

From what I'm hearing about North Quad, my opinions on the dorms will be something like

North Quad>South Quad>West Quad>>East Quad

haha.

You'll just never get over the fact that East Quad is better than South Quad will you chibears.

shakes head disapprovingly

North Quad?

It's always been called Bursley Hall.

No no no no...North Quad is the new residence hall that they are building on the current site of the Freize Building. It doesn't exist yet, but it is supposed to open in fall '09.

Bursley is just..bursley.

which is better, Baits or Bursley? I know that Baits has bathrooms, and Bursley has building block furniture

All "quads">Bursley

I have no expertise to offer on north campus housing other than I've heard it's just a pain in general.

You have a somewhat better chance of getting Hill/Central if you pay your enrollment deposit by March. But it's not a guarantee. This year especially -- since Mosher-Jordan will be closed, a higher % of the freshman class will be on North Campus. Which, as I said, isn't the end of the world.

I don't know what everyone is talking about...because I prefer the Hill...closer to CCRB, closer to Palmer field, tennis courts, etc. It's also the same distance from the diag as any of the directional quads.

By the same token, the directional quads are closer to the IM building and all athletic facilities, about the same distance from the Diag, but still closer to downtown (South U, State Street shops, etc.)
