Rumors are spreading that the internet cap is 50GB and not 20GB; however, in the housing package, there are questions about "What You need To Know before moving in to Cornell housing" and one of them is, "How will I access the Internet?"
The answer goes on to say that the "first 20 GBs of Internet use per month is included in your room fee."

So... Can anyone provide a link that has the internet cap? The actual internet cap.

From the CIT website: Network usage is unlimited, but is subject to network usage-based billing. Usage charges apply for traffic with off-campus resources beyond the student billing threshold of 50 Gigabytes of data transfer per month. There are never any usage charges for data transfer with on-campus (Cornell) resources. link:<a href=“IT@Cornell | Services and Support”>IT@Cornell | Services and Support;

Also if you look at NUBB the billing threshold is 51,200 or so.

20 GB was the limit for the 2010-2011 year. They probably didn’t update the package in time.

I know the different between internet and intranet, cuprevet.
I am asking about using the internet… Youtube streaming, Starcraft Battle.net battling, and Stumbleupon stumbling to name a few things.
Fallen, I need the link for the 50GB limit if you are implying that the limit has been changed to this or another number. I want it in writing, please.

Why so snippy? People are just trying to help, they’re not out there to have their intelligence questioned.

This looks like a fairly good link to me:
[CIT: NUBB: network billing rates & usage](<a href=“IT@Cornell | Services and Support”>IT@Cornell | Services and Support)

It says some cool stuff, look!

All student network use incurs a flat cost per month. This fee covers sending or receiving all on-campus traffic, and up to 50 gigabytes (GB) of data off-campus. For students living in the residence halls, this flat cost is included in their room rates.

Total student WAN usage above 50 GB per month, for combined wired and Wi-Fi (RedRover), is billed at $0.0015 per megabyte, up to 500 GB. Beyond that, the cost is $0.0010 per megabyte. There is a $1,000 cap for any monthly bill. This fee only applies to Internet traffic—the transfer of data to/from off-campus locations (the physical location of the computer is not relevant).

On-campus (Cornell-to-Cornell) traffic does not contribute toward usage charges. Students automatically receive an email notice if they reach the monthly student billing threshold of 50 GB, and can also check this system at any time to find out current usage.

A BIT MORE INFO ON POTENTIAL CHARGES…
Fifty gigabytes is a substantial amount of data—most students never reach a high enough level of usage to incur any additional charges. Even if students do use more than 50 GB during a month, and incur the cost for each additional MB used, unless they go significantly over the student billing threshold, the total cost will still be much lower than a comparable flat-rate monthly fee.

If you actually read my reply it says that you get 50 gb of data transfer (ie internet usage) and I provided a link where you could read it for yourself. Again if you login in to NUBB with your netid and password you will see that the billing threshold is 51,200 or so which means beyond using that much internet they will charge you. I’m not very computer smart so I don’t know the technical terms. I also don’t know how much internet is used by Starcraft. I know that youtube doesn’t use too much but netflix basically kills your internet usage. It shouldn’t be so bad now that the internet threshold is higher. I can tell you the only time I’ve ever gone over 51,200 gb was in March 2010 because I basically marathoned tv shows and movies on the internet. I watch a lot of hulu and netflix but even with both of those it is pretty hard to go over 51,200 gb.

Perhaps next time you ask for links/help/advice you should actually read the responses or just not respond to ones that you find useless especially since in this case you were provided with all the information you asked for.

^Cuprevet - I found the 50 GB thing - didn’t go that far down on the link before. My bad.
^wadawada - People make mistakes, sorry.
