Housing Qualms

...so I just received my housing assignment. I got my third choice (Copeley) and I'm not too happy with it. However, I did get Hereford Residential College and I'm #40 on the waitlist for the IRC.

Problem is, I have a sister who also attends UVa and due to certain circumstances, I HAVE to live with her. She didn't receive an offer for Hereford, but she is higher on the waitlist than I am for IRC.

What should I do? What is the likelihood that I'll get accepted into the IRC? And how is it that I'm later on the waitlist than my sister is when we both requested each other as roommates?

If IRC works similarly to Brown, we don’t know anything about requested roommates when we read applications, so each roommate would have their own score.

It sounds to me like you will be living in Copeley… You could always try to contact Hereford membership and see if they would accept your sis since they have accepted you, but unless one of you gets off the waitlist for IRC you can’t do the same for IRC (does that make sense?).

I know last year a group of girls all applied to Brown but one did not get in. I put the girl in contact with our membership chairs but she did not end up living in Brown in the end. So basically each person is considered separately for admission and sometimes one person can keep the group out. That is the problem with predetermined roommates. At least you and your sis have a legitimate roommate bond that will transcend a housing assignment.

well, if you do end up living in Copeley, I’ll just say it’s not that bad. I live there now, and while yes it is far, they are pretty nice apartments and there’s always parking. I have friends who live in Lambeth and they have less space for 6 people than we have for 4. We actually have counter space and room to move in the kitchen where they can only fit one person in there at a time.
As for the distance, it takes the same amount of time to get to central grounds that it does for people who live in Lambeth and walk…it’s about a 15-20 minute bus ride. I mean I’m not planning on living there for the next 2 years or anything, I’m moving off grounds, but it’s tolerable for just a year.
