Housing question...important

okay so i went on albert, clicked bursar, account summary, and next to housing it says hayden and $4,000 (something like that..which means its a low cost triple). okay i picked 2 other suitemates and we all put founders as our first choice and one of the girls is even early decision. so i called NYU and the guy said its just a placeholder and that its not official ...but my brain tells me it is because why would they put the cost there and make parents think they're paying one price when they'll end up paying another price.
anyways what are the chances of me convincing nyu to switch us to founders?? in fact, my mom has already booked her hotel in union square because i was so sure that i'd get founders. blah

If they said its not final, I would trust them. I was at the housing office today to see what the deal was. They told me nothing was set in stone until August 2nd, and that any numbers you see on your bill or anywhere else are just an estimate. They take an average of the dorms you are likely to get based on your application for that number.

I didnt talk to anyone at NYU about this, but I would assume since Hayden is the most sought after freshmen dorm, they wouldnt put you in it unless it was one of your top choices. Its probably like they said, a place holder.

My daughter just found out she is in Weinstein Hall. We’ve seen it during a campus visit and remember it as being pretty small. What kind of closet space is there? Is there space on the bathtub edge to put a spacesaving pole with shelves for shampoo and soap (the kind that goes from the tub to the ceiling)? What about those fridge/microwave combinations. Do students rent these or do they bring them from home? Is there space under the beds for storage? Any information would be most appreciated!

if your account summary says Hayden or Founders,it’s not going to change, right??

I don’t know if this helps.
In one of the picture it looks like a rack with a shelf overhead.

You should be getting info in mail about renting the microfridge. NYU uses a specific company. The roomates all split the costs.

There is space under the beds to use for storage. We bought the standard under the bed containers. However, some students put their bed on risers to allow for more storage and a higher bed.

Thanks milkandsugar for the website with the pictures! I had seen these before, but for the life of me I couldn’t remember the site. Housing told me today that even though my daughter was told Weinstein, that nothing is “set in stone” and the final assignments are made the first week of August. If it isn’t necessarily accurate information, why do they send it ahead of time to students? Weird!

The only reason I can think of is that the Bursars bill has to have something on there to show a cost for housing because the bills are posted in July.
Was Weinstein her first choice?
It seems weird that they would not have this a little more tightened up by this time. I know for the upperclassmen, the housing cancellation deadline just passed.

milkandsugar: The housing cancellation deadline for freshmen was the 16th, which seems really strange because not only do some people want to try to get their housing changed, but others don’t even know what dorm they are in yet! So if housing cancellation decisions for some people were based on which dorm they got and they still hadn’t been assigned by the 16th…

I am not one of these people, but it’s pretty weird.

Sara, I totally agree that it makes no sense to have the cancellation date BEFORE you get dorm assignments. On our bill, so far it shows D in Brittany, her fourth or fifth choice and not a great one. This did not appear until this week, after the deadline. While we still would probably stay in housing, it would have been nice to know. We’re still hoping all those who posted saying it was not a done deal yet are correct and one of the first three options will magically appear on the bill!

Weinstein, Hayden, and Rubin were on my daughter’s list of dorms she’d like. Weinstein is nice because it is air conditioned and close to classes, but unfortunately is very small. Hayden has the vegetarian dining room, which would make her happy, and Rubin has large rooms. For all we know she may end up in a totally different place! I find it weird that the bills come out ahead of actual charges. Since we’re sending a check from a 529 plan and they need a week or two to cut the check, we are going to be overpaying, since we don’t have accurate billing information yet and can’t wait until August 2nd, since that would make the check get there too late. I suppose we need to just take deep breaths and think of it all as a giant Catch-22. It should be more organized, but since it isn’t I am going to try not to get too aggravated about it. Weinstein would be fine with my daughter, so if that’s the dorm it turns out to be she’ll be happy.

The bills end up getting straigtened out, eventually. I have ended getting a check sent to me from the Bursar because by time they fix everything, I have overpaid. A nice suprise. Then again on the other hand I have received bills where I have underpaid and still owe money. NYU does not send out the Police or make annoying phone calls to collect. They are actually laid back about it. I carried a bill over last summer for about 400.00 which I didn’t even know about and they just carried it forward on the fall bill.

The bursar’s office person sounded nice on the phone. She said that if I wanted they could just credit my daughter’s account for semester II for the amount we will be overpaying. It would certainly be simpler if the bills were accurate in the first place. Such is life. It won’t be too long before the actual housing assignments come out and then as you say, things will get straightened out.
