Housing rates?

Hey all,

I’ve been looking at housing rate between universities and noticed pretty much all of them have you paying your housing fees in the summer months. (albeit at reduced cost). I’m posting here because UCLA is my number one choice. Do you have to pay this housing fee even if you’re not living on campus during the summer? I noticed once you can go to campus apartments, some universities give two different rate quotes: with and without summer housing, whereas others still only list for the whole year.

Am I just misinterpreting the cost breakdowns? For instance, in the residential halls, UCLA lists summer installments and then your other installments during the school year. This is the same for their rates for undergraduate apartments. But then if I go to UCI’s housing rates website, they also only list a year-round quote for the residential halls but give you two quotes for the undergraduate apartments, one for year-round and then one for just the school year.

You are misinterpreting the cost. Dorm style residences are priced per semester. On-campus apartments, usually available only after freshman year, may be listed on an annual basis, although that would be an exception.

Thank you for the reply! I’m just looking at the apartments for future planning, as I like cooking/baking and having a kitchen is a big plus for me going forward through college.

The dorms have summer payments to make it easier on families that don’t get financial aid. We pay monthly because we don’t get aid for it. Basically summer payments lessen the payments during the month. In the end you still pay the same annual fee it’s not like month to month rent. It’s just different ways to divy up an annual rate.

@10s4life oh okay that makes a lot more sense now. Thank you!
