Housing situation at UCLA...

First, how are roommates decided? Is it random if we don't pick our own, or do they try to group based on interests like most private universities do?

Second, does anyone have recommendations? I like to have fun, partying on the weekends, but grades are important and I don't really drink/smoke. Is there a dorm that's not party, party, party, but also not socially dead? Thanks!

You don’t get to pick your specific dorm just your type of room, so you would probably go with a plaza. And roommates are random.

Plaza’s are pretty dead socially, Halls are the best socially - you can just move yourself to the library to study if needed or the Fireside lounge.

i dont think rommates are random…this year my roomatse and my name all started with the same letter, and they are all similar sounding, i think they pick somehow

laserbase: coincidental?

Roommates are more or less random, though with a weighting towards people with similar general preferences (smoking, drinking, study, sleep, and room maintenance habits).

laserbase, roommates are most definitely not alphabetical or based on how your names “sound”

My daughter, who is a freshman, found her roommate on Facebook. Actually it was on the Facebook group that was started for the class of 2012. I have no idea if they have one going for 2013 yet. She told me that everyone was first just posting general congrats kind of stuff then they started talking about personality, hobbies, etc and actually had a roommate search section going. She became friends with lots of people, communicated for a while then picked a roommate. They both had to agree, put each others ID# on the housing form and they had to ask for the exact same housing with “roommate” being the number one priority. They ended up in the type of housing they wanted (a plaza, shared bath) but a triple (as they figured they would). They love their third roomate and the 3 of them get along great. So the third one was random (although they did match them a bit based on the questionaire). My daughter and the roommate she picked have become very good friends and are even renting an off campus apt. together next year. Also if you know someone you want to room with you can, you just have to put each others ID #'s done and make sure your applicatioons are the same. Good luck!

I dont want a bunk bed… a triple has a bunk right?

how are the parties in the dorms or in general? do people have things to do from thurs through saturday night?

every triple has a bunk bed and a loft bed, which is a bunk without the bottom bed except maybe the plazas only have one bunk and no loft i’m not sure

no plaza is bunk+loft too… and ricekrispy there is almost no parties in dorms, you can pregame then go to apartments and frats… but RAs do write you up for being loud and stuff just not worth it…
