Housing System... Akin to Harry Potter?

Hi!!!! I am a Smithie hopeful who has applied RD. I was wondering how girls are chosen for each house on campus. I know its one thing to be matched up with a roommate, but is there any certain system when it comes to choosing which actual house you belong in? For example, I keep thinking about the sorting hat in HP!! Once you are assigned a house, do you have to stay in that house for all four years?

Vassar’s housing administration is named the Sorting Hat :)

There’s no precise system. Admitted students are asked to fill out a brief housing preferences paper where you can list what area of campus you prefer, whether you’re interested in having a roommate (you’ll probably get one anyway, but some people DEFINITELY want roommates, even if a single is available, some people prefer to have a single if one is available) and other general preferences like: I get up early/late, I like to listen to music when I study/I like silence, etc. Then it’s up to the housing office to pair you in the right house. Keep in mind too that while people talk a lot about the character of each house, with new people moving in and out every year, there’s no fixed personality at any of the houses.

You don’t have to stay in the same house all four years. I lived in two houses: Cutter and Chase.

That’s a link of what the housing form looks like, that image is filled in with my preferences. After that bit, it asks you if you smoke, when you usually go to bed, if you object to people bring visitors over, etc.
