I recently got accepted to UIUC for Fall '08. I was looking online at the housing options and honestly I don't know where to go. I am 20 so I hear I can apply for a single room in Sherman Hall, but otherwise, what hall would appeal to me?

Consider this:
Kinda conservative background:
I dont drink
Dont smoke
Dont party, and prefer a hall where my neighbors aren't partying
Engineering Major, so maybe something near the engineering buildings? or library?

Thanks!

ISR is closest U of I dorm to the engineering quad. It's reputed to be generally quiet, but there's never a guarantee. There is a substance-free dorm or section of a dorm...I think it may be in Snyder? That's part of the Peabody Residence Halls, I believe, but it's also pretty far from the engineering quad. However, walking is healthy, and there are buses every 5 minutes.

If you go the route of private-certified housing (usually a bit more expensive than university-provided dorms), Hendrick House is close to the engineering quad. Newman Hall has a christian bent, but you're not required to be Christian...it just makes it less likely that your neighbors will be into drunken debauchery (plus the hall is getting upgraded this year, so you'll have very up-to-date facilities).

That's the most I can think of right now.

definitely hendrick house. its kinda too late to make really good friends w/ freshmen since you'll be a junior, its just the mindset

Hi! I was in the same boat as you last year this time.

I ended up going with the Univesity housing "Transfer Cluster." Right now it is the first floor of Hopkins Hall in the "Six Pack." Right away that may turn you off because of your searches - It almost did for me as well.

However, the way it is arranged, you are very removed from the loud, routy "freshmen" that give the six pack its reputation. You are on a floor with all other transfer students - generally Juniors but one or two sophmores and one or two seniors. We are a very quite, studious floor. We are social in that we hang out but know our studies are the most important things.

I personally love it and will miss it alot next year!

Is the IT open to transfers?

So how did you transfers make friends? Are you enjoying U of I now?
