I was accepted to the University of Illinois school of engineering and I am curious about what housing would be good for me. I would prefer to live someplace that is fairly quiet with a good mix of people from different majors. Also is the private housing expensive?
If you’re looking for quiet dorms, ISR and LAR tend to be pretty quiet.
All dorms have a good mix of majors, ISR is the most engineer heavy.
I don’t know as much about private housing, but Hendrick has a reputation for being anti-social and engineer-heavy (more so than ISR) but also having the best food, Bromley is full of pre-frat/sorority people, and I’ve heard bad things about Illini Tower. Otherwise I haven’t heard much about the private options.
I was accepted to UIUC and I’m staying at Newman Hall. It’s a Catholic dorm, but you don’t have to be Catholic to stay there and they don’t shove religion down your throat. I’ve known a good amount of people that stayed there, and they all loved it. The food is ranked as the best on campus! There’s an older wing and a newer wing of the building, and it’s co-ed (boys in one wing and girls in the other). I believe that if you choose the least expensive room option (double suite), it’s nearly the same as public housing. Maybe just a few hundred to a thousand more expensive per year. Newman Hall is the best to stay at. I DO NOT recommend Illini Tower, avoid that at all costs. Also if you’re a guy, check out the YMCA house thing. There’s only like 15 guys that live there, and my friend that stayed there said it was awesome!
