Does anyone have any pics of the rooms on the 15th floor? Looks like son will be bumping his head a lot! Are the ceilings as low as it looks from the outside of the building? He doesn't have a "normal" window from the pics I've found, just a bump out little thing that looks exactly like an attic window with a sloped roof.

No lounge, no kitchen and no elevator access! Do the students just go down to the 14th floor lounge and kitchen?

Does anyone know what LAVP means on the short hall on the left? It shows a room but nothing else except the letters LAVP so we are wondering what that could be.

It looks like nearby, underneath his room on the 14th floor, is marked as Residential Programs and not dorm rooms. Is that an office or what? Party room?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The top floor of JJ is actually kind of nice in my experience. We called it the “penthouse” not the attic, and rooms did have slightly lower ceilings and weird formats but that made them more interesting (compared to the rest of JJ which just had basic rectangle rooms). The rooms up there are also usually bigger.

The only problem is the elevator situation but it’s not a big deal to walk one flight down. He could definitely just use the kitchen on the 14th floor too (not that you’d really need to–it’s a sink and a microwave…).

As for Res Programs, it’s probably a supply closet. There are no offices in the dorms.

Thank you for your reply, NewLion. I emailed the housing office and they called me back today but before that, a wonderful CCer answered a bunch of questions for me. She knew that the Residential Program marked on the map for the 14th floor is where the grad student who is in charge of John Jay lives so it is not a meeting room or a party room. She was so nice and an asset to CC and really helped me get over my worries.

When the housing rep called me back, I was so surprised thinking they had their hands full with really unhappy people. I wasn’t unhappy as much as concerned but the rep was awesome! She actually walked over and looked at the room because I was so worried that my son would have to crouch down in the room since he is so tall. She said the walls are definitely slanted but he should have no problems as long as he puts his desk in that area because he will not be able to stand up where it’s slanted. His closet is still full sized so that was good to know, too.

He is happy so I am over being worried. The kids do call it “the penthouse” and not the attic and the feeling is they think it’s “special”-lol. I think the only real issues it that it will be hot so fans are in the plans. She said the kids just go down to the lounge on the 14th floor if they want to and they are free to use that kitchen, too. DS is not a cook but he does make PB&J so having a sink to wash dishes in will be good. He could care less about the elevator but I was thinking of move in and lugging all that stuff up. He can carry it!

I’m excited for him and just had a moment of “ugh” when I saw where his room was but as long as he’s okay with it, it should be fine. Thank you again for your reply!
