Can anyone share their experiences about choosing a roommate vs. random selection?
And does anyone know of a facebook group for accepted students?
Thanks!

Should student apply for housing who have not yet been admitted?

students should not be ABLE to apply for housing if they have not been admitted.

I read some where we can to keep our spots so when we do get in we have spot.

Only admitted students can reserve a spot. Some students who have not yet been admitted have reported that they were able to register on the housing site, but I do not think they will be able to complete the process and make their housing deposit.

Daughter hasn’t been admitted but we were able to register for housing and make the deposit. Little presumptuous i know but it is possible to register without yet being admitted.

^^well , something is amiss, as that is not supposed to happen. It is being looked into.

I really hope that being able to make a housing deposit this early is a sign of admittance. My two best friends are wondering if this is a “backdoor” notification of whether they’ll be accepted or not. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for anyone in the same boat!

From Menloparkmom earlier today on another thread:

‘the ability to register for housing is NO indication of your application status.
this is from the Dean of admissions:
“After all students have been admitted, the housing office goes through all profiles and deletes any that don’t belong to admitted students (the cross-reference ID’s, names and addresses with a list we provide to them after we’ve decided on our admits).”’

jmp123, I will keep my fingers crossed that it DOES mean acceptance!

^^ to all posters who hope the housing office “knows” who might be accepted- it doesn’t, sorry. They operate on completely different computer systems and for some reason let anyone “register” , then purge any invalid registrations when they cross check them with the admissions office in the Spring- kinda bassackwards, if you ask me, but that’s they way they currently have it set up .
any student who IS accepted can legitimately register with the housing office. Older registrations that were entered prior to a students acceptance will be discarded. so jmp123, if your DD is accepted in late March, then she can legitimately register then.

menloparkmom, are you saying that you spoke to someone in the housing office who said they are going to “purge” and/or “discard” the registrations that included a DEPOSIT? Did they mention if they would return the deposit or apply it to the subsequent registration?

The Dean of admissions communicated with the housing office after this thread was brought to his attention.
his email today said this=

" It turns out that this is nothing new. Apparently students have always been able to create an account on the housing website in the way described in the thread.

All the information gathered is student-entered and not checked against anything. One can enter any USC ID one wants (11111111111, 2222222222, etc.) and it will be accepted. Later, after all students have been admitted, the housing office goes through all profiles and deletes any that don’t belong to admitted students (the cross-reference ID’s, names and addresses with a list we provide to them after we’ve decided on our admits). I suppose that one could create a profile now and spend $45 right now to apply, but as soon as housing realized that the person wasn’t an admit, the application would not be considered valid."

Its not a “valid” registration if the student had not been admitted when they registered. They took a chance and [perhaps] tried to “game the system”. It seem very likely that those who made a $45 deposit for an invalid registration will lose that small deposit.

Students who have not been admitted [ yet] are not allowed to “jump to the front of the housing line” because they registered before being admitted.

Just think of it this way- should students who dont go to USC be allowed to register for USC classes? I dont think so.

I was not suggesting that they could “jump the line.” I was asking about the deposit and what would happen to it - and it does not seem to me that question was addressed by the Dean in his email to you, other than to say the application would not be valid - would the deposit them be returned to the applicant? I know that in the case of admitted students, the deposit is not returned and that makes sense, but if the system is accepting deposits from students who have not been admitted, the deposit should be returned as soon as the error is detected.

I dont know. I doubt the dean of admissions asked about the procedure for returning deposits for invalid housing registrations. The housing office has to answer that question.
