housing

I recieved my housing assignment and noticed a phone number below my address. Is this phone number for a phone in my room? I remember a phone hanging on the wall in the room I stayed in at orientation but I don't think it worked.

Are there any items I may need for my room that are frequently forgotten? Does anyone have ideas or tips for me on move in day?
Any responses are greatly appreciated.

I’m not sure, but there’s a number under mine as well.
If there was a phone in the room, then it’s probably functioning, but just not connected to any phone line at the moment because there’s no reason for it to be. But yeah, I’d also like to know the answer to this.

Hi! The phone number listed under your address is indeed the phone in your room. It’s not so useful for you since you have to pay for service beyond campus and local calls (see here: [Student Telephone Service](http://www.itcom.itd.umich.edu/telephone/students.html)) so you’re probably better off using your cell phone if you have one :)

And as for your second question, there will be things that you realize you probably need upon arrival and unpacking - they’re different for everyone, but for me it was essential toiletry items (forgot my toothpaste and toothbrush at home), flip flops for the showers, a robe for getting to and from the bathroom, and stuff that you wouldn’t really use at home but you will definitely use at college.

And as for move-in day, make use of all of the student volunteers (called Move-In-Makers)! They’re there to help you and they’re usually pretty nice too. Do you have any more specific concerns? There’s a lot of advice I can give :)

Thank you for the responses and advice. I will just use my cell phone I guess.

Cell phones are a good option  Yeah, the only real use I found for the phone in my room was for incoming calls - sometimes my phone was dead and my parents called me through the room phone. Most of the calls you might get in the room, though, are spam/scam calls advertising free cruises for taking a 10 question survey haha.

If you have a cell phone, then the phone in the room will be pretty useless. They were put in before cell phones were popular. I assume one day they will go the way of pay phones and be removed.
