Housing

I can’t find a thread for this, or maybe I’ve missed it…

When are housing assignments released, and where do kids, who did not fill out a ‘housing questionnaire’ ,get placed? A tent on the quad!? Are there any kids who did not submit said questionnaire? :-I

Most likely will end up in I House.

@CU123 You say "end up’ - is it the worst of all the housing?
I think it’s off-campus; is that correct? I so, it’s guaranteed to give me sleepless nights for the next year…!

It is not off campus and there is nothing wrong with it. It is farther to the main quad and the cafeterias than other dormitories. You are more likely to have a single if you “end up” in I House.

My daughter lived in I House last year as a first-year. It is farther from the quad than other dorms, but it’s not off campus and it’s not that bad of a walk (except during a polar vortex!). It’s a beautiful older dorm. It has a gorgeous wood paneled lobby, library and lounge. A lot of cultural programs and performances take place there. There’s a cafe in the dorm where students can get breakfast for a meal swipe and lunch with maroon dollars if they don’t feel like walking to the dining hall. It has music practice rooms, yoga/dance and workout rooms in the basement.

I House sometimes gets a bad rap, but my daughter really liked it even though it was not one of her original preferences. She made some great friends, loved her house culture, and is living there again next year in a triple (although most of the rooms are singles).

OP, do not fret! I don’t have a specific answer for how it works if your student didn’t fill out a questionnaire, but housing will turn out just fine, I’m sure! (If you’re really worried about the impact of not filling out a questionnaire, you could call housing and ask them.)

Good luck, congratulations, and welcome to UChicago!

@browniesundae and @ccdad99 Thank you both!

Do either you you, (or anybody else), have any idea when housing assignments will be released? All of a sudden, it’s getting real…!

Last year, I believe it was August 17th.

August 16th.

OP, what do you mean “didn’t fill out a housing questionnaire?” Are you saying your student didn’t complete the housing application by the (late) June deadline?

@JBStillFlying Yes, that is correct. He realized his ‘oversight’ a few days after the late June deadline and immediately contacted housing, however, they would not accept a late submission.

eta - I didn’t realize it was a housing application - ugh

OP, hmmm. I didn’t realize that the application and the questionnaire are essentially the same thing. Since UChicago requires that undergrads live on campus for 2 years, it seems like they have to assign him a room regardless, but I would call them today and ask. Hopefully, it will put your mind at rest and/or let you and your son know what to expect.

Thanks @browniesundae When he called Housing, they told him basically the same thing - they will assign him - I’m just curious where that might be ie if the slackers get assigned a tent on the quad! I’m fairly confident he will not be the only one who didn’t get his act together!

At this stage of the game, I’m reluctant to call; I just think some things he will have to live with!

From the first housing FAQ: “Students who do not complete a housing application will be assigned to any available space.”

https://housing.uchicago.edu/prospective-students/housing-assignments/

Practically speaking, this suggests I-House or Stony. Most likely I-House. However, I-House is one of the few dorms with its house system still intact (most have been obliterated and re-booted with the move to new dorms and some of the newer houses haven’t quite “gelled” yet). Assuming that you are assigned to I-House, you could still end up in a double because they were converting space to doubles there last year. However, most rooms there are single rooms.

Your student might also end up as the mystery roommate for someone in another dorm. Anything is possible. That’s the bad news. The good news is that your student shouldn’t be going in with any expectations for a popular dorm or room, unlike others who did fill out the application on time and do have those expectations, but end up getting something else.

The Vue53 notice just went out again this year, so they are at least a little bit over-booked.

@momo2x2018 Let us know how it turns out! As an aside, do you have twins? Just wondering based on your user name. My UChicago D is a twin.

“At this stage of the game, I’m reluctant to call; I just think some things he will have to live with!”

He won’t end up in a tent on the quad. Not even sure there are triples. He’ll just end up wherever they can place him. He might luck out - or not. But yeah, those deadlines are crucial. My oldest almost missed one for her college housing (not UChicago) because “e-mail and FB are for old people” so she was blowing off a bunch of e-mail notifications. Oops! If it’s any comfort, I’m not really sure my son filled out the questionnaire portion of his application other than specifying which dorms he wanted. He can’t recall, and of course nothing got printed out. So he could end up anywhere as well!

@JBStillFlying - You mentioned the Vue 53 notice going out - how was it distributed? Just wondering, haven’t heard anything about it from my rising 2nd year. Thanks.

I just googled Vue53; it looks very nice, but I hope they don’t put my S there!
I could see I-House as a good option; it seems to have a very traditional vibe, which my S likes. I’m not too in-love with the fact food is so far away, but I could see him being happy there.

In the past they have not “put” kids in Vue53 - so I would not be worried about that. The “deal” with Vue 53 - at least in the past, has been that when on campus housing is over-subscribed Housing offers subsidies to students (not first years) to give up their spot in a dorm so they then have room for the first years - all of whom live in the dorms - so your son should be fine.

Vue53 has been offered to the upper div students for the past three years in order to address varying degrees of over-capacity. It’s a pretty nice deal because you pay the dorm housing rates but the apartments are a lot nicer over at Vue53. However, many still pass because they like being closer to class/Reg/Ratner or with their friend group in the dorm. @CUandUCmom - perhaps it’s a targeted invite due to specific shortages in certain dorms. @momo2x2018 I-House is definitely a traditional “old dorm” with a lovely visiting area/drawing room on the first floor. Back in the days before they built the new school building, Booth would hold many of their corporate recruiting events over there. Pretty sure they’d never have done that at North or South or Max, even if those buildings had been up at that time.

@CUandUCmom my son is also a rising 2nd year and received an email with the Vue53 offer a few days ago. $1500 discount, 2 people sharing a 2 bd/2 ba condo.

Thanks @milee30. What dorm is he scheduled to room in next year? My daughter is returning to Max P and, as far as I know, she did not receive the Vue53 offer.
