Housing

So I'm a transfer and I haven't been accepted yet, but I'm thinking I will be and am planning ahead as Wes is my #1 choice. I looked at the housing options today and noticed that for transfers, the following would be available:

Nicholson
Hewitt
Washington Street (302 and 300 something)
High Rise

For someone that's very social but also focused on academics, which is the best choice? I'm guessing Nicholson, after reading up on each one, but can someone describe them all. I'm a little bummed that I'd have no shot at WesCo...not so sad about not getting a shot at the Butts. :D

You're on the right track. Nicholson gets a good deal of the overflow traffic and ambience from WesCo since they are right next door to each other and are similar physically. Hewitt is at the other end of Foss Hill and has the same 1950s architecture but, no guarantee that it will be anything like WesCo in terms of people.

Anything on Washington Street is a house. This could be very cool in terms of social/academic flexibility. But, a bit further from campus than the first two choices.

Hi-Rise is just what it sounds like. Located half-way down the hill; convenient for shopping and restaurant hopping. Originally built for grad students, it still has that "you're not in Kansas anymore" feeling to it.

So Nicholson is quite close to WesCo then? I'm thinking it's perfect since I want to be in the middle of everything but still be able to have some peace when I need to study. Foss Hill is pretty much the main area/center of campus eh?

Ugh...I can't wait to visit and hate waiting till May for a decision. :) Thanks for the info john.

Say it with me: WesTCo. As in West College. PLEASE.

And yes, the Nics or Hewitt sound like what you're looking for. 202 and 230 Wash both usually have a substantial number of sophomore transfers. HiRise is mostly juniors in two-person apartments, could be alienating for a transfer, I think.

Hewitt will be only sophomores and juniors (no frosh), and the closest dorm to the new University Center. Either way, it'll be a good choice.

sorry if I offended you.

Do you know how many people typically stay in 202 and 230? From what I've read, it seems like Nicholson is the largest in terms of population, which is what I like.

I hear Hewitt is really quiet...

No offense taken, just a silly pet peeve... :)

202 and 230 both have around 30-40 people, I think. They're big houses, whereas the Nics and Hewitt are dorms with three connected buildings each. They're pretty much the same size, and right next to each other, so it won't matter too much which you pick. One thing is that bands often practice in the Nic lounge, which if you live right next to the lounge can be either annoying or great, depending on the quality of the band. I definitely don't think of Hewitt as particularly quiet, but I presume you've talked with other students who say it is?

No I wish. Just read the ************** book as of yet. Either way, it sounds like I can't really go wrong. The houses actually sound incredible...so 30 to 40 people live in one big house...are they pretty close to Foss Hill?

As of now, my main criteria are proximity to campus activities and being surrounded by people so I can integrate into the community.

Washington St. is actually the northern boundary of campus. You'd be very close to the arts center and film studies center, but, further from the library and science labs (and, of course The Uz.) OTOH, many ppl would kill for a house that size.

Please ignore anything you hear about what various dorms are "like." I'm on the Undergrad ResLife Committee and we have spent considerable time thinking of ways to stop the proliferation of the rather stupid "reputations" that various dorms have (like Clark being for arrogant jocks, the Butts being for antisocial loners, WestCo being for burned-out drug addicts...)

Remember, every dorm has an almost 100% turnover every year, so it's a new group each time. Don't assume what your peers will be like before you meet them.

I agree with xmatt about dorm reputations. Mostly a bunch of crap, except when people CHOOSE the dorms based on those reputations and then they become self-fulfilling prophecies.

Johnwesley is right that 202 and 230 Wash are farther from the center of campus. They are nice, though.

If you want to be in the center of campus, you want Hewitt or Nicolson. They're right next to each other. You can download a map of campus here: http://www.wesleyan.edu/about/campusmap.html. Hopefully it'll be useful to you.

Thank you jumble. I really am out of luck with Wesleyan because, as much as I want to find out more about it, the website never fully loads on my computer. I don't know what the deal is...specific links like the one you've posted will work, but the main page freezes things up indefinitely, and our computer/internet service isn't awful or anything.
