Just wondering what the inside word was on housing. Which is preferred, Gummere, Barclay or HCA?

From what I've heard from Haveford students, there is really no preferred housing; it's more a question of what you want. If you want a single, Gummere is the place to request. If you want a roommate, Barclay is the place to request. If you are opposed to the idea of co-ed bathrooms and prefer to live with people of your own gender and enjoy the thought of more independence, the apartments are the place for you. While all of the housing options are different, from what I've heard, almost everyone at Haverford, whether they end up at the dorm that they requested initially or not, generally loves their housing situation.

thanks, that was very helpful indeed

you may also want to consider the varying degrees of social interaction within each living situation. if you are living in the apartments you;ll have a roomate and you'll be more isolated from the rest of the school and unless you make an effort to stay up campus, most of your friends will be other apartment kids.

barclay is prettier with bigger rooms than gummere and closer to the dining center and library but you are almost guranteed to have a roommate (unless you manage to get one of the smaller 3 single-suites). from my own experiences though, barclay is less social than gummere.

i lived in gummere as a freshmen. my room resembled a prison cell but it was pleasant to have a single. our hall was very social though i didn't particularly get along with most of the people. therefore i mostly kept to myself which is very easy to do in gummere...and believe me you'll want personal time. the basement also served as a giant common room (four gummere common rooms, including the one that was on my hall had been converted to doubles) which was an excellent forum for social interaction. parties are more frequent in gummere due to large basement but i never had any particular problem with party goers other than the occasional messy bathroom.

it really depends on your personal social preferences where you want to live. co-ed bathrooms are not bad at all. i never experienced a problem with them. in you want to live in the apartments, remember all freshmen must be on the full meal plan, thus you'll be treking up campus for all of your meals + your classes + to use the library or get to bryn mawr. that walk can seriously be a pain in the butt if it's snowing or cold (6 months of the year). however, i knew plenty of kids who loved their apartments.
