The engineering living learning community houses 105 residents, so the space is limited. You would have to apply to be accepted and placed there.
JP is mainly freshmen, only a small fraction of the population there are upperclassmen, usually the ones allowed to stay in the living learning communities as mentors. You have to have your housing application entirely done way in advance to be more likely to get your first pick since JP is the newest building.

I had my app done back in January, and everything was in (deposit, etc) by April.
The problem was with the form my Dr’s office gave me. They had given me the immunization sheet for Florida K-12, so it didn’t include meningitis, so I wasn’t totally complete until late May, after the first cut off :(

I wondering if I could get on a wait list for Juniper-Poplar, to get a room there if any open up.

Hmm. You can fill out a room change request and hope they have a spot open in JP, but it’s very unlikely. They can change your room up until August 1st, I believe. If you want to live in the ELLC, that is a separate application you need to do. If you get accepted, you will be automatically moved to somewhere in the 5th floor of Poplar.

Also, another thing:
As a first-year engineering student, your classes will be all over campus, so it really doesn’t matter where you live, per se.

Well, I’m done with a bunch of gen ed credit hours from Dual Enrollment anyway, so I will have more classes in the math and engineering building.

They really should consider taking AP and dual enrollment credits into account when making housing decisions. If a student has taken over 30 Credit hours of dual enrollment, it kind of doesn’t make sense to place him/her on a floor with all freshmen. (except for maybe because everyone will be somewhat clueless for the first few weeks.)

Math classes could literally be anywhere on campus. Most of them are in LIF and CHE, but some do branch out to CIS and CPR. Be ready for that. Also, until you actually get in the department you’re going for, you will still have classes all over campus. Trust me. I’m in that same boat. Engineering classes are taught everywhere, even BEH.

For housing, your credit hours don’t matter. Even if you earned an AA through dual enrollment while still in high school you are still considered a FITC freshman and will be placed in freshman housing.

Castor is not that bad. It’s right next to a dining hall, not far from the Marshall Center, and the recreation center isn’t too bad a walk. I lived there two years ago and had no real complaints about Castor. Kaleid is right about you likely having classes all over campus–Castor is centrally located and convenient to most classroom buildings.

Kaleid you a computer science major too! lol But yeah I know what u mean, it helps if you live at Juniper/Poplar cause most of the engineering classes r near there.

I’m computer engineering, but close.

Honestly, JP is better for those already in their department or close to getting in.

Yeah. They also have an engineering living community in the Poplar building. It was very useful for me as a first year student with all the resources there.

Does anyone know how Mu is? I asked for apartment style dorms but they randomly put me in Mu. I hear it isn’t the best dorm but I wanted to know from someone who’s been in that dorm before.

How is Kappa? I wish I was placed in an apartment or Castor…

@swettyangel:
I’ve never lived in mu only visited due to having friends over there and doing bull haul. But just to give u a heads up it doesn’t have an elevator only stairs since its pretty old. But its what u make out of it and depends on the roommates around u. I’ve seen people make the best of it and turn it really nice. But it just depends. Hope that helps

Thanks. I got a room change the other day to Magnolia Apartments. Thats what I wanted all along was apartment style so that I would be close to my classes that are in the engineering and chemistry buildings. I’ve seen Magnolia and they are nice :)

Yeah Magnolia is pretty nice! Your also not too far from the jpop dining and the starbucks and POD store. Its a really good place I’m glad u were able to get a room change. :)

ya I’m happy too I can’t wait to get up there in 2 weeks I’ve been on campus a couple times already and I’m glad I got Magnolia C :)

How early do I need to apply to get put into Juniper-Poplar? I noticed the application just opened up a little while ago. Should I try to have everything in by Christmas or is that wayyyy to early? Thanks!

@ fayth93
What year r u going to be? and r u trying to apply for next school year? It depends like it hards to say but I’m guessing you would want to do it right away. The reason I was able to get into it is because I applied to one of the LLCs for freshmen year and got invited back to be a mentor for the program the following year.

yeah im applying for Fall 2012, but i’m not applying for an LLC. Would I need to apply a little earlier than expected for that reason?

The beginning and ending dates for housing applications are the same for all freshmen regardless of whether you apply for an LLC or not. The LLC applications are additional and separate from the housing application, which should be submitted as soon as possible to try to get your first choices.

Already applied and been placed, but thanks! :)
