Houston Music Scene

I've been wondering what the local music scene is like in Houston. I'm sure it gets all the big arena acts, but I'm more interested in small venue performers. It would also be great if someone could point me toward a newsletter or website of some sort that could keep me updated on acts coming to Houston.

As I side note, I'm going to see M. Ward and the Watson Twins tomorrow and couldn't be more excited.

Thanks!

Coming from the land of Bright Eyes and Tilly and The Wall, you might be a bit disappointed by what Houston has to offer, but that’s not to say that there’s a musical void. HoustonPress is a decent source to find out what’s going on around town: [Music - Houston Concerts and Clubs](http://www.houstonpress.com/events/music). If you’ve ever foraged for a similar publication in NYC or Chicago, you’ll find that it’s a less interesting spinoff of TimeOut. Also, Warehouse Live usually hosts some good, lesser-known bands in addition to some larger acts. I saw Ben Folds there last semester.
As you probably know, Austin sorta steals the thunder of the Texas music scene. Luckily, Austin is only a 2.5 - 3 hour drive, and the ACL lineup will be announced on April 28! Sorry, I’m kinda excited…

Or if you like country music (like me), college station is 1.5 hrs away. and Austin is more like a 3-3.5 hr drive from rice

How’s the Houston orchestra? Would I be easily able to find people to go with me? =]

I’ve actually driven to Austin in less than 3 hours, but I wouldn’t recommend it :/

I’ve never been to the Houston Symphony, but I’ve heard good things. Don’t expect them to sound like Chicago or Cleveland, but they’re good. Also, the Shepherd School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras are incredible. Some people say they’re better than the Houston Symphony.

Modulation,

The Shepherd School Symphony Orchestra is highly regarded. Free concerts throughout the year and also master’s recitals. Sometimes, Itzhak Perlman guest conducts --his daughter studied flute at Rice. Last Friday, they performed Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” and Brahms’ First Piano Concerto… [Shepherd School of Music - Houston, TX](http://music.rice.edu/calendar/april_2009.html)

And, if you feel like getting off campus to see the Houston Symphony, you might just get free tickets. My daughter and friends went care of Rice a month or so ago.

Thanks a lot! I’m a huge classical music fan. It’s nice that Rice has such a renowned music school.

As a matter of fact, the auditorium fills up when the orchestra plays so you have to get there early to get a seat.

and if you are into rap music, I’m sure there’s some pretty intense underground stuff in the 5th ward. you may want to pack heat though…

Also Rice Program Council has been pretty good about getting live performers to play at Willy’s Pub this semester, and we had two big concerts this year, The National for homecoming and Ben Kweller for Willy Week.

I second that the Shepherd Orchestra is kickass. My roommate’s a musi, so it’s lotsa fun going to see her play.

I didn’t get out to as many concerts in Houston as I would’ve liked. I did go to Warehouse Live once, which was pretty cool, and I am soooo pumped that next fall Widespread Panic and Allman Bros are playing at the Woodlands Pavilion (a slight drive out of the city). I’m also really excited for the release of the ACL lineup.

Three big concerts, actually. KTRU got Ted Leo and the Pharmacists to headline the outdoor show.

Well, if you like the big names, there are a lot coming to Houston–

Toyota Center:
http://www.houstontoyotacenter.com/events/

Dane Cook, Eric Clapton, Beyonce, Il Divo, Green Day, Jonas Brothers, P!nk

Ha, I’m actually really new to Houston and did not get out of the Rice bubble as much as I could have and should have, so I know there are definitely more venues out there (big and small), but obviously I don’t know any except Toyota Center and Warehouse Live.

If you’re really interested, just ask people at KTRU or Shepherd School for recommendations on music venues and performances in Houston. Or people knowledgeable about Houston and its music scene who don’t go on CC, haha.
