How about start the transition phase earlier?

Hi, I am really excited about going to Princeton this fall! I am from China. I've heard that most international students, especially those who have never been abroad, will have a transition phase before really fit in the American colleges.

I am thinking if we can arrive in the states like a month earlier, and spend some time getting to know the new surroundings. But it's just an idea, I am still not sure how to work it out, like where to stay and with whom. Any suggestions? Or anyone who's thinking the same thing?

I think there are restrictions on a student visa -- you can only enter the US up to so many days before the actual beginning of student orientation. Not sure how strict they are about this, but I doubt that 'a month earlier' would really be feasible.

As for me, I have a long-term tourist visa personally, and relations in the Bay area, so my situation's somewhat different. :) But if you really are interested in heading out early, why not talk to Princeton and ask them if they can arrange something for you?

Thanks for the advice! I will definitely ask them. I do have a B2 visa in hand that's valid through 2008, don't know if that's going to work.

To study at Princeton you will have to apply for a F-1 or J-1 visa.
Any of those two visas allows you to enter the States 30 days prior to the date that's on it, usually the beginning date of an international student orientation program.

I think they made it more than 30 days.
