So I just got admitted to Vanderbilt University as a transfer student from a pretty liberal LAC in the Northeast. I am a queer student and have never experienced any homophobic sentiment at my current school but I’ve read a lot of posts about how conservative Vanderbilt is. Is it actually true?
It’s slightly more conservative than most private top tier schools, but still leans liberal, like just about every college.
I would highly recommend contacting the Office of LGBTQI Life and getting in touch with a student.
I have a number of gay friends and know they’ve felt infinitely more comfortable here than they did in their hometowns, but can’t offer much more about their experiences.
For kicks, here’s SAE, one of Vanderbilt’s oldest fraternities, raising a rainbow flag over their fraternity house in support of the LGBTQI community.
Vandyson lived in McGill for 1.5 of his four years. Many students were active in LGBTQ matters and most of the residents were left of center. To be fair, there is no “need” to reside in McGill to get a sense of community and comfort on Vanderbilt’s campus as gay students are busy in activities throughout the campus and living in all the dorms. You can google McGill if you like. Good luck on your decision. If you have been at a LAC in a smallish town in the NE, you may really enjoy Nashville for a couple of years. Def a fun city with a creative vibe.
I love the word “queer.” LOL. You sound great.
Here’s the thing with pretty much all colleges right…the mood has swung…honestly, most colleges and their students have embraced being gay and having gay classmates…honestly, it’s stunned me how fast it happened.
As to Nashville itself, no problems! And it is one awesome town.
You will find jerks everywhere.
With that being said, you will be fine!
