How am I doing? (Freshman)

Hi, I'm a freshman in high school, and I really wanted your opinions on how I'm doing so far. I don't want to find out my junior or senior year that there are so many opportunities that I missed out on earlier in my high school career that would not only have looked good on my college app, but also have helped me out in life. Please feel free to give advice. So here are my "stats" so far:

1st semester grades:

Honors Precal 96
Honors English 1 97
Honors Biology 100
Art 1 98
Technology systems 95
Honors World Geography 99
Honors Spanish 3 100

Rank: 2/1039

I took the free practice SAT the College Board is offering and here are my scores:

800 Math, 800 Writing, 650 Critical Reading

Ecs/Awards: Minor math club awards, 104.5 AMC 12A, qualified for AIME (think I got a 2), and I also got something in the mail about some Eisenhower Foundation Scholars thing, but I think it's a scam like the National Honor Roll (which I also received).

Projected 10th grade schedule:

AP Calculus BC
Honors English 2
AP Chem (or Bio, haven't decided)
Honors World History
Honors Physics
AP Spanish Language
AP Computer Science AB

Summer: Volunteer at hospital, take chemistry via correspondence with Texas Tech University

Hopefully I didn't leave out anything. Thanks for all your help!

-Joe

Awful. Just awful.

You need to beef up your EC's. It's clear that you have an interest in math and science, so I encourage you to pursue them as deeply as possible. However, don't hesitate to look to other areas you may be interested in and pursue them to. I never suspected I would ever want to be a lawyer (I'd wanted to be a scientist since forever), but then I joined the Debate Club, Model UN, and Amnesty International, and now I'm stuck between public policy and science.

omfg i'm a freshman too. it's hard for me to believe that someone my age is going to take AP CALC next year. but then again, you seem like a genius....

Are you Asian? Because if you are you're basically like all the other Asians and will end up getting waitlisted at your top choice in college. If you're white, you're doing meh. Do more EC. If you're hispanic or black, your in to your first choice.

You need to adopt some extracurriculars, in and out of school, that pertain to something besides the sciences. Try expanding into something using Spanish, since it seems you have reached a moderate level of competency.

Kirei na Neko Ku:

lol, sadly what you say is probably true... ><

If you wan to hear that you doing well, then yes...
but if you want to hear for the purpose of college, then you must wait till atleast your junior, you cant tell anything...kids like you in my school, got rejected from all the ivy leagues, and most of us are in the top

In case anyone couldn't tell, I was kidding. But you guys are crazy. He's a freshman, with plenty of time to find interests. You're doing fine, buddy. Keep up the good grades.

:)

I sincerely wished that I had interests and/or good study habits freshman year-if I had cared, I would have been in a much better position now in terms of GPA/EC involvement. I just realized last year that school was not the only place one could find outlets to express creative desires in a group setting.

"Are you Asian? Because if you are you're basically like all the other Asians and will end up getting waitlisted at your top choice in college. If you're white, you're doing meh. Do more EC. If you're hispanic or black, your in to your first choice."

was that a nice way of saying hispanic and black people have lower expectations when it comes to school and they aren't as smart so they get accepted on an easier basis?

That is kinda messed up

Oboesmrtguy40:

Well many colleges have affirmative action...

no....its called urm....he is referring to idiot system of urms, where only certain minorities are privileged, while the rest of the minorities are not.....

That's basically becasue everyone takes the same courses that applies to the Ivys. OMG I TOTS TOOK AP CHEM LOLOLOL! It's like. Umm okay not special. Everyone that applied probs took AP Chem and is "the top" of their school. Basically, you need to stand out. Any little way helps. It's no surprise people got rejected left and right, it's because none of them do anything interesting. Sure, there's music and theatre. But everyone does that. How about AP Calc or whatever? Umm yeah, you're nothing special compared to the other applicants. Try to move to Montanna or Wiscounsin, then you'll stand out. Go to Spain or Latin AMerica for a year and don't take any AP courses while your there and just enjoy it. That'll boost it up for you. Basically, do what you want. Don't worry about how many APs you're taking and do something that makes you original and that makes you stand out but makes you YOU! Don't go to Spain if you don't want to. If you wanna go to Russia instead GO FOR IT. Don't let otehr people, especially on an online forum tell you what to do. That is all.

Wow, I feel like the only freshman that hasn't posted up stats and stuff.

Maybe I should do that sometime soon?

^^^ very well said.....i agree

It's called, affirmitive action deary. And according to stats, yes. Hispanics and Blacks don't apply to college as much as whities. And thus expectations are lowered, and thus you get Affirmitive Action. Read before you judge. It's bitter sarcasm, get used to it. It's the sad cold truth and I won't lie. My people don't apply to college because we're too busy trying to find a stable job.

That is all.

shravas:

There really is no point posting up your stats so early. You should just do well in school and build your EC's.

Yea, I already know what people will say about me.

But I feel so left out :D.

shravas is a freshman?
I thought he was out of high school this year.
