How Are Roomates Chosen?

I was wondering what the roommate selection was like for BU. It there like a survey for your preferences, and if so, what did they ask?

It's a completely random process, there's no surveys, you just fill out a housing application listing your housing preferences in order and get a random roommate....

wow, that kinda sucks, I wish they had a way to pair you up with someone that has similar habits etc.

DS roomed with someone he knew...you can do that but both people need to indicate that on their housing applications.

on this link, if you scroll down a little there is a list of the questions asked.

<a href="http://www.bu.edu/housing/assignments/process/freshmen/housinginterests.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.bu.edu/housing/assignments/process/freshmen/housinginterests.html</a></p>

I wouldn't reccommend rooming with someone you already know. Part of the fun is rooming with a stranger. It rarely goes badly, and if it does, switching roommates is relatively easy via this system called "Direct Swap."

It all depends on what you like. When you fill in the housing survey, they'll ask you if you have someone that you know who wants to be your roommate. Otherwise you get a lottery ticket and assigned to random housing w/ random roomies.

In later years in the dorms, you decide whether you want the same room, want to go in the lottery for your building or go into the larger lottery. If you dig into the housing area on the website, you'll see there are a variety of ways to trade rooms. Direct Swap was noted above.

even if you fill out the survey BU gives you, picking a room/roommate is still pretty random right?

basically, roomates are random... im in a management specialty house..... but outside of that ... the selection is purely random.. they tried to match ppl up years ago.. but i guess it was a big failure.. so they just dont even try...

you get to rank your top 5 dorm building choices. you can also "sort of" request a floor if you choose a specialty floor. as a rising freshman, you can't request a specific room, unlike everyone else. if you know enough about the building you wanna live in, it doesn't hurt to try by requesting a specific room in the "additional information" section or at least saying something like "i'd like a room with a window view overlooking the charles river."

for freshman year, roommates are completely random (unless you and a friend mutually request each other). i'm assuming the only thing they take into consideration is allergies (they would room 2 peanut allergic students together). also, if you're an athlete, your coach might request to place you in a room or floor where some of your teammates are.
