I recently got admitted into Stevens for computer science, and I have some question regarding the professors here.
From various search on the internet there seems to be quite some people that are not happy with the professors here, usually something along the line of they don’t put effort into teaching, are very hard to reach, large amount of work over short period, etc. I am especially worried as one of the post I saw specifially called out the CS department as one of the worst. Now I understand these things are very subjective, but do these concerns have any merit at all?
My opinion only: I would say that the CS department has experienced some inconsistency in the past couple of years in terms of teachers. Several instructors left the program and other instructors were assigned to teach classes that they had not taught before. Instructors were stretched thin in terms of the amount of students they needed to teach. My son’s advisor changed several times, which is not optimal.
As everywhere, there are some very good and some not so good instructors. Hopefully, things are stabilizing in terms of faculty.
I would advise you to visit on accepted students day and actually talk to some of the students on campus personally. In the past, they have had student panels on hand to answer students questions during presentations. If you want to speak one on one, I’m sure they would be able to answer any questions you have after the presentation.
