I was wondering how colleges will know about how much volunteering one does. Specifically, one thing i do is volunteering for the school like helping with parent/teacher nights, open houses, incoming freshman night, etc. and will have a lot of hours for this. How would this get listed when applying to schools?

They don’t know or verify. Just estimate.

But I mean how do they ask for them because there are tons of people I know who do absolutely nothing… will there be a section just bluntly asking for volunteering stuff?

You would just list it in one of your seven extracurricular spots. There’s no special volunteering section.

On a note related to the first reply, I would advise asking your school exactly what is listed on the official transcript. On mine, evidently, they actually have a “number of volunteer hours” slot for each year. It wasn’t a problem with me, but some people may not realize how coincidentally one might get caught for inflating numbers unrealistically. I’ve heard of other schools listing AP or even SAT scores.
Slightly unrelated, but just a heads up. :)

Good luck!
