How bad is it to take the SAT more than three times?

What I have heard is that what the adcoms think about is

Take it once, see your trouble areas, take it again, improve, then try one more time to get another jump up

from what I have heard is that after the 3rd time most people plateau, at least that is what GC have said from what they observe

they will not reject you if you took it four times, especially if it was the old and the new, so just relax

i took it once... i guess i'm just a slacker : )

oh well. 2280 suited me fine... i sort of wish i had taken it again though, just in case..

If a college clearly states on their admissions website that they will take your highest composite scores, why shouldn't we take them at their own words? Isn't it dishonest if they say one thing and do another?

Why is "three" a magic number?

Btw, I know some students took SAT in their freshman/sophmore years to apply to certain summer programs. Does it count too?

I wouldn't worry about it. Concerning taking it freshman/soph years to apply to summer pgms, whenever you have CB send a score reports, it shows all SAT and SAT II tests that you have even taken and have been graded up to the time the report is sent.

My S took it 4 times-June soph, May and June jr and Oct sr years. During one interview he had in Sept of senior year, the admissions counselor encouraged him to take it the 4th time because he was right on the cusp of their merit $ criteria. Four times definitely did not hurt him in admissions and the result of the 4th test - +140! I think you will be fine. Good luck.

I got my highest verbal score the 4th time I took. I got a little bit lower for the writing/math.

I took it four times and im not freaking out. However, I did plateau my third time....
