What if it is the same situation with AP Chemistry ? S is interested in premed path, has straight A’s in AP class at school but got 3 in AP exam? should he report or not ?
Last year, approx. 75% of students received a 3 or lower on this exam.
If it’s below what you think is competitive at a school, just don’t report it. I don’t think you have a “duty” to report it any more than the 30 on the AMC test you took. This isn’t a security clearance investigation.
A sad commentary on the CC mindset - being outside the top 25% of the upper echelon of high school students (typically the top 10-30% in a typical school) is “not good”.
The 3 will not be the reason why your son didn’t get in somewhere. No school is looking for perfection.
However, A students in high school tend to become A to B students in college, not B- to C students in college. So a more reasonable expectation is that A students in AP courses score 4 or 5 on the AP tests. Lower scores suggest lower quality AP courses at the high school.
Also, the high school students taking AP courses and AP tests are presumably the stronger students in those subjects. For example, the students taking AP calculus in high school are probably on average stronger math students than those whose first encounter with calculus is in college.
Thank you
