My son is struggling in a Honours class in the Freshman year, but wants to work harder and stay in the course. But in the worst case scenario if he cannot maintain a C he will be dropped to the regular course by the school and there will be a WP on his transcript. He is a good student otherwise and maintains A- in other courses. Is the WP a big Red flag for college admissions even if the rest of the transcript is good? Should he take the risk of WP or just take the easy way out and drop down to CP course now? Please advise.

Freshman year is a good time to take risks and figure out what one is capable of. If he is enjoying the challenge, he should stay in the course. If, however, it is just creating unnecessary stress and starts affecting his other classes and activities, and is not an enjoyable challenge, then I would not stick with the course. In other words, if it is helping him grow, then it is an opportunity not to be missed.

Discrepancies on the transcript can be addressed in college applications, and this has a perfectly reasonable and commendable explanation. Freshman grades are probably the least important part of a college application.
