How bad would it look to drop AP Lit?...

...in lieu of AP Chem or Bio?

I want to go into engineering, and so far I've taken AP USH, Lang, and Euro. Next year (senior year), my schedule will be:

AP Physics
AP Calc BC
AP French
Yearbook (I'm Editor-in-Chief)

...and I have room for either AP Gov, Lit, or Chem or Bio. I will only have room for one. Yearbook is considered an English credit, so if I just relied on that to supplement would that look slacker-ish? But then again, I'd be replacing it with Chem or Bio (either; whichever fits better), which pertains more to my intended course of study. I'll probably just take regular Gov (requirement). Any advice?!

Well if you’re replacing it (considering your schedule is maxed?) then it shouldn’t be a problem at all.

If you can fit more classes in, I would try to include them.

I really can’t. There’s a chance I can take like one trimester of Lit, but if I want to have another AP science aside from Physics, I think this is the best route.

Do you think only taking 1 tri of AP Lit (but still taking the AP test), and then AP Chem, in addition to Calc, Physics, and French would look fine? Or am I sacrificing being “well-rounded?”

And I know I’m not taking AP Gov, but I’ve already taken 2 AP social studies (APUSH & Euro), so do you think that’s fine? I heard AP Gov is considered lightweight anyway, and it’s not like I want to go into politics. I’d still (have to) take regular Gov anyway.

If you’re really interested in engineering, them AP Chem or Bio would definitely be preferable over Lit/Gov. Personally, I think Chem would be better for engineering, but that’s just me.

Try taking lit for just a trimester and see how it goes. If you plan on taking the AP, it will take a lot of work outside of school.

The only reason I’m considering Bio is I might be interested in biomed engineering, and there’s always the chance I’ll just go into med in general (but if I did decide that I’d probably make that decision once I’m already in college anyway). Chem, at my school, is definitely easier, and I think it applies to both engineering and medicine, so you can’t really go wrong. And if an AP course is 3 tris long, does it look bad to only take 2 tris? Are colleges aware there were 3 tris offered, and this looks bad or something?

No I don’t think you’re sacrificing being well rounded by dropping AP lit (as long as you fill it with another AP).

It seems like you really want to take these other classes over Lit, so follow your heart! Take your passion and run with it.

And is Yearbook justified since I’m an EiC? I mean, seniors have SOME electives right?

So right now, I think I want this:

AP Physics (3 tris)
AP Chem (3 tris)
AP Calc BC (3 tris)
AP French (3 tris)
Yearbook (2 tris)
Gov (1 tri)

And it fits! But no AP Gov, or Lit at all…

If you were part of the NU/UofM adcom, you wouldn’t look down on this? You’d look at it in a positive light because I’m pursuing my interests right?
