Does UT feel huge? How long does it take to get to classes and the dinning hall from most places.

I thought I’d be overwhelmed by UT since I came from a relatively small school. But it’s really not that bad. It usually takes me 10 minutes to walk to my first class (farther from dorm) and then less than 5 to walk to other classes. Difficult at first, but now I see it as daily exercise. I can’t imagine how anyone would get the Freshman 15 at UT.

Dining is great where I live - Kinsolving. A lot of ppl come over just to eat. Most people just eat at their dorms, but the Drag (Guadalupe St.) has a bunch of restaurants along the west side of UT campus. To get to any point on there, it ranges from 3-12 ish minutes depending on which side of campus you’re on. I like everything at UT. Most my friends are at other smaller schools and they all complain about how there’s nothing to do at their college towns. Well…UT’s in the center of Austin. The size is big comparatively, but that’s because it has so much to offer.

Great feedback thank you. I would think my son would get lost over there!

I live on the far north end of campus (Moore-Hill) and often don’t leave my room to go to class until 10 minutes before and I usually get there early. Basically all the dorms except the honors dorms are all on the far north end or all on the far south end with all of the classes located pretty centrally. I often walk all the way from the Northeast corner of campus (Moore-Hill) to the very Southwest corner to Kinsolving to eat and even that walk takes only maybe 15 minutes at the very most. The first few days you get there it will feel so much bigger/more confusing/terrible because you don’t know all the fastest routes an where everything is located (plus the first few weeks are super hot in August) but after you get used to it – campus doesn’t feel too big at all. Hope that wasn’t too rambly and actually helpful!

Oh that was really interesting to read. Do the freshman get to know one another pretty quick there? I hear that getting courses is a bit of a nightmare. How is the food?

@crazochi

Um, South is towards the capital. North is towards the higher numbered streets. That puts Moore-Hill at the south-east corner of campus along with the stadium and Jester. The North end of campus is the area around 26th street and Dean Keeton.

The campus never felt that huge to me. It’s not as if I walked the entire thing every day! Most of the time, I walked from my dorm (SRD, on 27th Street) to Cockrell Hall. Not a very long walk. I actually enjoyed walking across campus when I had English or math classes on the other side. I was at Texas 6 years (BS and MS) and loved my entire time there.

Yeah, I think my son would love it there if he got in, hasn’t applied yet. We are OOS. He is just a bit iffy about the size…so I thought I would ask here and let him know, thanks.

Some of the freshman level classes are enormous, just as they are at any large state university. You can be somewhat overwhelmed by the size in those. Once you get into upper level courses, the courses are much smaller and every professor I’ve had in upper level knows my name. It doesn’t seem large at all.
