I've contacted a professor out at a university that does unique research that I hoped to participate in over the summer. He said it would be possible for me to come out and participate for the research, but I would have to cover my own travel costs and pay $1800 for room and board and meals. For me, this is a lot of money, but I would like to participate in this unique research (I couldn't find similar research closer to home).

Are there ways I can go about finding funding to help me out? Where should I search for funding and support?

It is tough to find scholarship help for summer programs. I guess you could check with local organizations like Rotary or Lions Clubs. You could do your own fund raising between now and then (eg, work). Some ideas:
Will your family let you have a garage sale if you organize it, advertise it, and run it? That can be really profitable in a short period of time.
There is always babysitting, dog walking, and spring yard work. Put a flyer in your neighbor’s mailboxes.
Hard to rely on, but maybe you could work part time (evenings/weekends) in the city where the research is. The problem is being sure you could get work when you get there.
Do you have stuff you could sell on Craigslist? This, of course, you should clear with your parents first due to (1) interaction with strangers, (2) they may disagree on what you can/should sell.
Can you get anyone to help you – will your parents match your funds if you earn half of it? Or do you have any close relatives (aunts/uncles/grandparents) who might help out? Could you ask your parents for some cash instead of Christmas & birthday presents for the next year? That wouldn’t get all of it, but maybe you could scratch up some that way.

I don’t know what year of high school you are in, but could this wait until summer of 2013? Spend a year earning money here, then go the next summer?
