How can I find which school is best in my major

I can't find any resources but US news rankings - which only have 10 colleges on the list.

I plan to major in biomedical engineering.

Which is better in BME? - Minnesota, Wisconsin-Madison, Michigan, Northwestern

Is there really much of a difference or should I focus more on other aspects of the schools?

One last question, would an employer pick a Northwestern engineering student over a state school engineering student with equal credentials?

To answer your second question …

Several of the state flagship universities have extraordinary engineering departments. While the list of which are “extraordinary” and which are “good” varies by the specific engineering discipline – the list includes University of California Berkeley, University of Texas Austin, University of Illinois Urbana, University of Wisconsin Madison, University of Michigan Ann Arbor and several others.

So the short answer to your question is that graduates with strong academic records from the above (and other) State flagships are recruited aggressively (even in today’s difficult labor market) by top employers.

A quick way to get a read on their strengths is to look at the course catalog to see the breadth, depth and variety of classes offered- as well as whether those interest you. Also, look at the dept on the web, for backgrounds (education and research) of the professors. Not foolproof, but woth the effort.

Thanks,

Would it be a good idea to e-mail them and ask why they would give me an advantage in BME over other schools?

Honestly, I think they would expect you to have researched that on your own. The better the dept folks are, the busier they are- and the U and adcoms generally put all that info “out there.” I can’t see you scoring any points by asking them why you should be interested. (If anything, you are supposed to be making the college interested in you.)
It’s different if you actually have a referral to someone there and a casual conversation is arranged. That’s IMO.
