Where to go for Biomedical Engineering?

I am currently a high school senior trying to figure out where to go that would best suited to working in the field of BME. I have been admitted to Purdue and UW Madison and also am waiting on a response from UMN Twin Cities. Cost wise Madison and UMN are the best options as I live in Wisconsin. My big dilemma is I have no idea where to go, especially because I have heard a lot about how BME BS degrees are not valued highly by employers, I am willing to do graduate school but cautious of whether I can guarantee myself admission to it. Should I instead opt for a different BS degree then opt back into a MS degree later? If so or not, what school will do me the best for working in the field of Biomedical Engineering? Thanks to anyone who can give me some advice and relieve some stress from me.

ME is probably the best alternative. All three of the schools you mentioned are strong. Have you visited?

Yes, I have visited Purdue and Madison. I liked Madison’s overall feel but am unsure of how crappy the winter might feel with all of the hills. Purdue seemed pretty nice but a bit boring.

It’s the upper Midwest. The winter is going to suck at any of them.

You can thrive at any of the three. I’d visit MN. It’s close enough that there’s no reason not to. Then go with your gut. There’s a lot more to choosing a college than academic rankings (they’re all OK anyway). It’s the intangibles that really make your experience.

Good luck.

A lot of BME programs are notorious for structuring their curriculum such that it is skewed towards breadth rather than depth. That is, you cover some of each of the traditional disciplines and how it applies in a biomedical context, but you don’t really learn the actual engineering material as in depth as if you were to do a more traditional discipline. Your better bet is to do one of ME, EE, or ChemE as an undergrad. That also gives you more options, should you later develop interest in a different industry.
