I’m currently a sophomore and I’m a little worried about my lack of leadership. I know a lot of colleges care about leadership, but right now I feel like none of the activities I do demonstrate any leadership at all. I’m in 2 clubs but know I won’t get an officer spot next year, play in the wind ensemble, and take art classes outside of school. I was planning on starting a fundraiser, but am now having second thoughts for many reasons. Any ideas on what I can do? My intended major is nursing, if that helps.
Relax, just do good in everything else.
Will you have a job this summer? That can be a good way to show leadership outside of school ECs.
@LuckyCharms913 I have been offered a job at Kumon but the problem is I can’t drive yet and my parents are not able to drive me there more than once a week so no:/
One of my kids had no leadership positions, but was an outstanding performer in an academic team activity. She led her team by example, not with a title. Focus on doing stuff well, organizing activities, or trying things that not everyone else is doing. My kid who had no leadership positions got in everyplace she applied.
I am an alumni admissions ambassador and I would say that most students don’t have leadership sophomore year…they start having it Junior year.
How to show leadership if you are not an officer:
-
In your clubs, they must have some activities that they do. Perhaps they do a fundraiser? or an event for the school? or a service activity? Volunteer to organize that or suggest that they do one.
-
Do you belong to a house of worship? You could also organize an service activity. We had one HSer that organized a “backpack” program where they would give food to students who were on the free lunch program so they would have lunch on weekends too. Or you could lead an outreach activity
-
Can you teach? So if you take Art classes, can you help teach Art to little kids? Maybe not at the same place.
Agree with the others, stay active and the leadership will come. I think the term leadership can also be thought of as responsibility. Some things you might be able to do to demonstrate responsibility at your age are babysitting and tutoring younger kids.
I did community service through my school somphmore year and became an ambassador of it at the beginning of senior year. Just stay active in your clubs and enjoy yourself.
thanks for the replies, I’ll keep these in mind:)
