Every college I see wants students to be "leaders". I'm not even looking at super selective Ivies. The schools i'm looking at have about 30-50% acceptance rates. My school is very small, about 60 kids per grade. The only activities offered are sports (i'm not an athlete) and clubs. I am involved in about 5 clubs, none of which have leadership positions. This is because to even start a club the teacher is the moderator, and teachers are the ones who start the clubs for the most part. PLUS, even if I were to try and start my own club, get a teacher to moderate, etc., today I realized that my school changed the rules. Now, instead of club sign up being in mid-September, it's on the first day (which was today). Clubs already had to be formed by now. So this chance at leadership of some sort for me went down the drain. I do volunteering outside of school, but not much else is offered in my town. There aren't any extracurricular programs and such for high schoolers to get involved in. I was just wondering if anyone had some advice for me on how to be a leader when the opportunities aren't presented to you in an obvious manner.

All I can tell you is that you could try to take the initiative to help out club sponsors with their respective clubs. Other than that, if you aren’t a senior, you could probably plan out what kind of a club you’d be interested in starting, and start talking to teachers who would be interested in sponsoring it. Also, is there no student council at your school? Being a member of student council would count as a leadership position.

Agreed with the above. Also, moderately selective schools don’t really care about the extracurricular aspect of your application as much. If you have the grades and test scores for them, they’ll most likely let you in. Just make sure everything else is solid and you should be good to go.

Are there any honor societies at your school? What sort of leadership does everyone participate in (if at all?) That might give you some ideas of where to look.

Best of luck!

There is a student council at my school, but you have to have leadership experience to get in it, which being as I switched from a public school with no extracurriculars offered whatsoever, to a competitive private school, I do not have. So in a nutshell, I can’t get a leadership position because I have no experience because I can’t get a leadership position. There is NHS at my school, but you have to have leadership positions to get in. I have the grades and everything else to get in. Switching schools really messed me up on this. While all the kids at my school started off small and were able to work their way up to leadership positions, I have not been able to do so.
