Hi Guys,
As a sophomore in hs I realize I’m fairly early in the admissions process, but I figure its better to start early than late. After visiting schools all around my area and a few afar I went to Carnegie Mellon and fell in love with it. Pittsburgh seemed like a great city (I love cold weather haha), and since I have always dreamed of creating a startup their entrepreneurial attitude is perfect for me. I hear people complaining about the competitive atmosphere, but personally I need that competition to push myself. I also realize that Carnegie Mellon is a reach for almost anyone, but I am determined to get in. As if this wasn’t hard enough, I really want to major in comp sci. Nonetheless here are my stats… do you guys think I am on the right track, and if not please give some advice to improve my shot. Also does anyone know how much Carnegie Mellon values athletic recruitment, if so that could be my “in.”
Gpa: 4.00 (unweighted) 4.44 (weighted)
rigor: honors pre calc, chemistry, latin AP Computer Science (one of the two ap’s offered to sophomores)
psat:192 at my school we take the psat in 10th as a sort of baseline, I took it without studying a wink. I plan to began
studying this summer and I think I can easily score in the 2000s
ec’s:
HS waterpolo
HS/club swimming: I have not talked with the coach yet, but through looking at their times and consulting my club coach who knows the coach their I believe my times would fit nicely into the recruitment track they have their especially because I did not have a chance to compete in any championship meets due to an injury
FIRST robotics: I’ve done it for the past two years and love it, I plan to continue the next 2
This summer I am applying for a computer science internship at a lab affiliated with johns hopkins
active member of my school’s of juggling club and will be a leader next year (not that important, but might make me stand out)
built my own water-powered jetpack that propels you up to ten feet off the water (another one of those quirky details that admissions love…essay topic maybe???)
community service I am kind of lacking in… I spent a week working with inner-city kids teaching them how to read and stuff like that (24hrs)
Thanks so so much for taking your time to read this I really appreciate it.
Let me know what you think
