To make things short and simple I'll make bullets:
-graduated high school in fall 2011 & started school at state university
-left after 1st semester because of bad grades, too much partying, health issues (grades: C,B,F,F,F)
-started community college in spring 2012(grades: C, C+, F)
-fall 2012 at community college (grades: B,C+,C)
-spring 2013 I was dealing bad with my health (depression) and was in the hospital,
quit my part time job, and got more help. (grades:W, W, F,F)
-fall 2013 (A-, A)
Right now spring 2014 I am taking three classes and hoping to do well since I did so last semester. I want to transfer schools again now. I just can't decide on what I want to do. Psychology, Photography, or occupational therapy. My heart is in photography because I've been practicing it for years, but my parents don't seem confident in a career with that. I just want to push myself to go to a new school, move away from my parents, and get a degree in something that I will love. I guess I'm just here looking for some advice. :\ :)

With those grades, can you just start over and apply as a new student, rather than transferring? I would think that transferring would be difficult with those grades and the lack of direction. Why transfer if you don’t know what you want to do when you transfer; shouldn’t you have a game plan about what you want to do with your degree, and then find a school that meets your needs for that?

@CityEntrepeneur When you apply for a school, it is required that you send transcripts from all previous schools.

@cityEntrepeneur I see where you’re coming from, but as @TransferGopher said, it’s not that easy. No matter where I go to I have to have a transcript of my former schools. Any advice @TransferGopher?

@melixx28 get the best grades you possibly can. That’s about it. You need to show colleges that you’ve changed since your early years.

Why don’t you just take a semester or two off entirely, and think about what you do want to do with your life. Right now your best transfer option would be to finish off an AA or AS at your community college in some major field that has an articulation agreement with a 4-year institution. Sit down with the Transfer Advisor at your CC, and find out what your credits add up to.

I 2nd staying out of CC until you figure out what you want to do.
By math OP has around a 1.6 GPA; idk if it’s even possible to transfer with that low of a GPA.

My advice would be to find a college that WILL NOT factor the Fs into admission GPA IF they have been repeated with a passing grade. e.g. UCs. Then retake all the Fs and get As. That would boost your GPA up to around a 3.2. At that point you’ll still need about a semesters worth of units; get As in those and your GPA should be around a 3.4-3.5. Basically you need straight As from now on.

With that said unless you want to stay in college for the next half decade you’ll need to take more than 3 classes a semester.

@happymomof1 I can’t really take off a semester at this point. I already took spring 2013 off after being in the hosipital. I’m fine going to school now. I want to transfer to a new school and the more time I take off and try to finish an associates degree, I’ll be 23. I don’t want to be an old undergrad living on campus when I transfer. I’m taking 3 classes this semester @bomerr. It’s english 101, intro to photojournalism, and intermediate algebra. My gpa right now is a 2.42.

What was your part time job?

For the company/place you worked at, you could get a degree and make it a better job?

what are your hobbies?
What is your passion?

Find that out and then look for what will pay as well. Some people wont agree with this but doing “What you love” alone without thinking about the market is not good.

Once you’ve decided on your career path, take the next step. What universities offer your major? Target some universities and then get your AS/AA from a CC. Repeat those F’s if you can but focus more on the future from now.

Thanks @strandedinhell. I was just working for the clothing store forever 21. I have no intentions of having a career around retail. I love photography and would love to do freelance photography, but my parents would like me to have a degree. I’m also interested in occupational therapy and psychology. I might just look into getting my bachelors in psychology and minor in photography or journalism. Right now given my time at college, trying to get my AA would take another year and a half. I haven’t ever been able to be a full time student (12 credits) successfully.

I would just like to transfer somewhere far away this fall 2014 and gain some Independence. I can’t continue to take some CC classes here and there.

^ my friend did that; his emotions got the best of him. Now he regrets being stuck in a university that isn’t that good.

AA/AS is worthless. Focus on repeating the Fs and finding a place to transfer.

It doesn’t make a difference if you start being independent 2-3 years later. Trust me. If you rush it just so you can get away from your parents, a few years down the line there is a possibility you’ll regret it.

My point is, don’t let emotions like that drive your career/university options. So what if you have to spend 1 and a half year extra? It will give you a chance to go to a better university

Yeah, I guess that’s true @strandedinhell. I guess I have to honestly take things at my own pace. If I don’t have luck going off on my own this year, I’ll just wait until I m ready. @bomerr, yeah I think I’ll try and focus on the 3 classes right now and see where I am in a month. The fact that I haven’t successfully finished a semester as a full time student really makes me hesitant to transfer. Since my parents are paying, they want me to wait to be a full time student. Thank you all for your responses and advice. I really appreciate it and am taking them into account.
