So I’m currently a sophomore and I really want leadership positions for college. My school’s alumni are really unmotivated and in some clubs people barely attend meetings and you have no opposition if you run for a leadership position in some clubs. (Though in more recent years, students are becoming aware of the importance of leadership positions and more of them are running.) The main problem is that I’m a huge introvert and a really quiet person (the kid in the corner of the room). I don’t really talk to lots of people and am not popular whatsoever. Most people just know me as the kid that’s going to Harvard or some college of that nature since apparently I’m one of the smartest kids around. (Which i really hate since people hold me at high standards and I really doubt I’ll get into those schools) What are some things I can do to get those positions and for people to actually vote for me. Any tips?
One secret that I didn’t learn until I was a lot older than you are now:
Leadership is not about bossing people around. Leadership is about helping other people to be better. Leadership can also be about making a club be a better club and be more interesting for more people.
Look for opportunities to help other people do whatever they are trying to do better. If you help people now, then in a year or two they are likely to see you as a helpful and responsible person and support you in getting a leadership role that makes it possible to help even more people.
That is the wrong reason and you will not be successful. It isn’t about having the title of a leadership position, it is what you do in that position.
FYI, you may want to check the definition of the work alumni before you use it again.
Lack of passion for what you are leading in will shine through. I agree with @Eeyore123 in that you should not be doing leadership roles for college applications. You have to realize that in being a leader, people are counting on you to be the passionate person who makes changes to the club for the better. I would start by reevaluating your reasons why you want to be a leader. Being altruistic, social, and passionate will gain you votes. People will NOT vote for you if the only reason why you are running is to get into college.
^^^ and I need to work on my typing skills.
Think about what your passionate about. Also remember ec’s do not have to involve the school at all. You could see if your library has a way for teens to help out. Do you have a local public access tv station which may have youth programming and offer ways for teens to be more involved. If your religious you can help your house of worship with religious school or community projects. College admissions doesn’t just view titles as leadership. For school clubs perhaps start by offering to help with little things like cleaning up after a meeting, stapling newsletters etc so people can see you want to be involved vs just wanting a title.
