How can you find out if the rights to a show have been released?

I'm in a musical theater club at college (not a MT major yet...planning on auditioning for grad programs) and can submit proposals for the productions we put on. Instantly many "dream shows" I'd love to do came into my mind. But how can I find out if we can actually do these shows, that is, if the rights have been released? Is there a database somewhere that will tell you, or do you have to search for the individual musical? Thanks!

It depends on who owns the rights to the show. One of the big ones is MTI. You can go to their website and see which shows they own rights to, upcoming productions and get updates on when rights for “new” shows will be released:
[Music Theatre International: Licensing Musical Theater Theatrical Performance Rights and Materials to Schools, Community and Professional Theatres since 1952](http://mtishows.com/)
R&H is another one:
[The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization](http://www.rnh.com/)

Samuel French is another
[Samuel French, Inc. The House of Plays & Musical Plays for Over 175 Years](<a href=“Homepage | Concord Theatricals”>Homepage | Concord Theatricals)

Tams Witmark holds the rights to many of the others

[TAMS - WITMARK MUSIC LIBRARY, INC.](http://www.tams-witmark.com)

Theatrical Rights Worldwide

[Home | Theatrical Rights Worldwide](http://www.theatricalrights.com)

Here’s a website which lists shows available for amateur productions, and which company owns the rights: [Show Rights: Alphabetical Index](Stage Musical Rights Index)
