I emailed transfer housing and they told me to use "thumb tacks"... I don't think thumb tacks can hold up a picture frame... So what have you guys used that will not tear up the walls or take off paint? Can you use nails?

Make sure you are not hanging anything in a frame with glass in it. That is what creates the weight. Your best bet for frames are the black metal frames you can find at most discount stores. Look for ones with the corrugated cardboard versus the Masonite backs. Masonite is very heavy.

The absolute lightest way to hang something is to have it mounted on FoamCore (black edge looks best) and then have the store who mounts it for you give you a hook for the Foam Core. Then, you don’t need a frame. You can hang a 2’ X 3’ poster on FoamCore from a push pin. Good luck!

I think I remember reading somewhere that nails are prohibited.

I’ve put nails in every wall I’ve ever had at UCSC (for 3 years now). You just have to make sure to cover them up when you move out. My dad got me a little tube of spackle to bring with me so I just put a little bit of that in, and housing has never fined me for anything.

You can use white (no specks) toothpaste instead of spackle to fill pinholes.
And the minty fresh smell is a bonus!
Skip the frame, too heavy and will bonk you if there’s an earthquake strong enough to shake it off the wall.

The 3M command strips are great for frames and they also have small strips for photos and posters. I tried it out on our walls before sending to my daughter to use in her home.

nails are prohibited but my freshman year I put nails on the walls and never got fined. 3M commands strips are good too.

So they expect to have NO holes, like nail or pin holes? Then why would they suggest thumb tacks (lol)? The frame I have is a light weight cheap wood one that I got at Bed, Bath and Beyond. aquafina14, sounds like a good idea. Are the holes easy to fill up with the spackle?

EXTREMELY easy. Just put a little dab of it on, smooth it out a bit and the wall looks like new. I’ve probably made my walls look better than they were before by filling them hahaha.

Really??? So it doesn’t leave like a spackle colored blotch on the wall?? Cool beans then :)

It really depends on the staff member that checks your room. Some are lenient others can be very strict and comb the walls closely. The toothpaste thing works but at the same time I have heard of instances where people using toothpaste have been caught and fined. They recommend not using nails and if you want the greatest ease of mind, just don’t use them. There are plenty of alternatives to pushpins as well, I personally use the 3M command strips and they’ve worked great for holding up heavy denim, picture frames, and even a small white board.

So those 3M command strips do not strip the wall of paint? That would be the most expensive fix for housing
